I have lost count of the number of times I have walked past Thanh Binh on Magdalene Street. It is a small spot, but it really stands out …

I’ve been in Cambridge for years yet somehow managed to miss this absolute gem of a place. Really yummy and varied Vietnamese food, lots of options. Although they don’t serve alcoholic drinks, they allow BYOB with a small £3.50 pp corkage. The staff were lovely – a bit more help would have been appreciated, unused to this cuisine we ended up ordering practically identical starters. But both delicious dishes, so really cannot complain. Super recommended!

We came here as a group of six for dinner and were very lucky to get a table, as the place was packed.

The food was absolutely delicious. I usually like to try several dishes, but this time I only had my own dish (plus a taste of a friend’s), and both were excellent. Everyone at the table seemed very happy with their food. I had a red fish cooked with ginger, coconut, and coriander—it was super flavorful and perfectly cooked.

One of my friends is vegetarian and dairy-intolerant, and the staff explained that all dishes are dairy-free and they also offer vegetarian options, which was great to know for people with restrictions.

The only strange part was when we asked for the bill with a VAT number—they wrote the number by hand, which was unusual and a bit confusing.

Overall though, the service was helpful, the food was delicious, and even though it felt a bit pricey, it was worth it for the quality. I will definitely return and recommend it.

Oh and it was extremely fast!

Underwhelming Experience

Believe it or not, it’s my 1st time coming to this restaurant. As it doesn’t open at Sunday and bank holidays.

The starters were a wow. Quail and soft shell crab, so exclusive! Unfortunately the table only has spoon, fork and chopsticks. No knives for us to cut the quail therefore messy.

While the mains were quite underwhelming. Quite expensive but nothing special.

When the dessert menu delivered, they kept coming back to ask if we are ready to order.

Fine. I guess they were desperate to get their table back. Therefore we left without ordering any desserts.

Also, it’s not a problem to have slow background music. But it would be better not to play minor keys all the time!

I felt thirsty after the menu too. It means the food has MSG. Quite a surprise for an expansive restaurant like that.

Wonderful. Came here for birthday lunch at the recommendation of my daughter. She is very selective about her restaurants and said this place was amazing. She was not wrong.

Seated immediately, very helpful lady talked em through a couple of food options and I took the beef curry with jasmine tea on the side. Tea arrived very quickly, lots of it and tasty. The food portion was generous, but this was nothing compared to the taste. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and spiced to perfection.

Had a lovely time and would highly recommend this place to anyone who understands that the Vietnamese understand their cuisine better than some of the English reviewers who were more critical.

In summary, ignore them, come here, enjoy. I shall return 🙂

Had a lovely meal and really appreciated the attentive service and friendly staff, who were totally relaxed and happy to help. The leafy decor upstairs was pleasant and downstairs even more so, as the road outside tends to have a lot of busses (hardly the restaurant’s fault but the old diesel ones are noisy when they are at the traffic lights!). The food was delicious and the menu had something for everyone. Do try the durian icecream – it’s just excellent.

Very disappointing experience as we ordered a few coffees expecting a Vietnamese style filter coffee dripping into a mug with condensed milk, but instead we were served powdered coffee for 4 quid. Contrary to what I think authentic Vietnamese coffee should be made, I saw the servers pouring a substantial amount of hot milk into the mug and then operating a coffee machine.

The prawn mini cakes and the soup base of the beef pho tasted bland. We were served sweet soya sauce and sesame sauce with the pho, and we were advised to add them into the broth. I was really surprised by this advice. Perhaps the shopkeepers should consider eating in any pho restaurant in the UK – you could even consider the pho chain stores in food courts – to get the slightest bit of knowledge about Vietnamese cuisine.

Absolutely loved the decorations inside, absolutely rammed full of greenery! It was more expensive than I had anticipated but the food was piping hot and loaded with herbs – very fresh! The staff were friendly and we had a chat about Vietnam afterwards whilst sipping our Vietnamese coffee, which was strong as an ox. Definitely looking forward to trying the other items on the menu.

High standard Vietnamese food. Good taste and quality. Good service as well from their staff. Just a little bit price, for a one person, you need spend 30 pounds above for a readable dinner, without alcohol.

Delicious and authentic Vietnamese food. All the dishes we had were amazing. Generous portions and great service. It’s a family run business, and it has a wonderful atmosphere. The plant decorations create a lovely, fresh yet cosy vibe.
