Heading to MJ the Musical or A Christmas Carol? You need to try the Pre Theatre Menu at Thailand on Bourke.
This menu is $49 pp or $90 for 2.
The menu includes :
➖A cocktail
➖A street style mixed starter tray
➖Curry
➖Pad Thai
➖Rice
➖Dessert
The starter tray was absolutely amazing, and it was such great value for us to get one whole tray each!!
I also loved the curry (watch out for the spice!!) which had delicious and HUGE prawns in it.
The sticky rice in the dessert was cutely shaped in a heart, I loved it!
All the food was delicious, although the food was a little slow to come out! It was busy though.
I was very generously invited to try this menu out!
Overall 3.6 ⭐️ out of 5.

I wasn’t sure what to expect here, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprized – it’s not your usual restaurant. The website is glitchy, the QR code menu is all over the place, but once you commit to the experience without expectation – it’s wonderful and freeing.
The wine shop has some great pricing for take away and dine in, the tap beers and cocktails are also very, very well priced, plus every staff member was warm, helpful, and effortlessly capable in their perfect state of flow.
Now to the hero of the experience. The food. Since Thailand on Bourke is located so close to a few theatres and venues, I thought it fitting to try the “Pre-Theatre Feast” for $49, or 2 for $90. This feast includes a wine cocktail, mixed starter tray, curry, rice and a dessert that, as I will soon discover, will have you rolling out the door.
The mixed starter plate was a delight offering a solid sample of goodies and sauces, and for mains I opted for the red duck curry and the prawn pad Thai, over ordering as usual.
The red duck curry was exploding with flavour and warmth without burning heat, beautifully balanced and generous with the duck.
As for the prawn pad Thai, 2 king prawns on a mountain of pad Thai fresh shoots, tofu, plenty of peanuts and an overwhelming energy of generosity and hospitality.
Before we get to dessert, I tried the “Wine Cocktail” that comes in many flavours, I wasn’t expecting much, but after my third, its fair to say I quite enjoyed the ice cold, sweet, fun beverage in a giant wine glass.
I was quite worried I wouldn’t have room for dessert, but out came a sticky rice heart and a flower of mango. The perfect way to finish.
This whole experience felt warm and authentic – I’ll definitely be back.

It’s bold and home-style and far from fancy and gets the job done. And for the price, it’s a reliable CBD pick without blowing the budget especially on a Monday when the whole fish is only $24.90 and the small plates are only $10. Not to mention the cheapest beers I’ve seen at prices that make “happy hour” feel redundant.
Like other reviews be prepared for salty, spicy, sweet and sour – whatever the flavour it may be too intense for some proving dessert during dinner is way more fun then leaving it until afterwards.
We tried the Pork Pad See Ew, smoky, chewy, and packed with flavour. The Sukiyaki Seafood Noodle was rich and comforting, with perfectly cooked seafood. Morning Glory Tempura with Spicy Seafood was crispy and fiery, a standout dish. Veg Spring Rolls were golden and addictive and the Deep Fried Barramundi Fillets with Dry Curry Sauce were bold, aromatic and melt-in-your-mouth. Finished with Mango Sticky Rice and refreshing tropical drinks. Every bite was a delight.
The service was warm, the vibe was cozy and the food? A Thai blockbuster. Highly recommend!
I liked that the mixed starter plate had a variety of little bites to try, including a satay chicken skewer, deep fried garlic chive cakes (these were so good) and more!
I had the beef pad Thai which was so tasty, there were large slices of super tender beef. A highlight was the mango sticky rice, it was seriously so so aesthetically pleasing- probably the prettiest mango sticky rice I’ve had (and I’ve had quite a few, including in Thailand)
The staff is also super helpful with suggestions and really friendly!
We had:
Tom Yum Hed A$16.9
Green Curry Chicken A$19.9
Panang Beef Brisket A$22.9
Coconut Rice A$4.5
Plain Roti A$6.5
Poo Maa Pad Pong Karee A$25.9
Poa Pia Puk A$8.9
Everything was delicious, generous, and beautifully presented. The Green Curry Chicken and Panang Beef Brisket were absolute standouts, and the Tom Yum Hed had the perfect balance of spice and depth of flavour.
On top of the incredible food, they have a great and affordable wine and beer selection, which is perfect if you want to make it a full night out. The family-run vibe makes it feel really welcoming and relaxed – you feel like part of the family as soon as you walk in.
If you’re craving authentic, bold Thai food in Melbourne CBD, this spot is a must-visit. We left completely full, happy, and already planning our next visit!
This place reminds me of the Thai restaurants my parents used to take me to—high-quality food, bold flavors, and no shortcuts in seasoning or ingredients, bringing back those nostalgic memories.
It’s not fine dining, but it’s the kind of restaurant that older generations in Thailand love: slightly pricier (in Thailand, not here) but worth it for the authentic taste and quality. If this restaurant were in Thailand, the food quality would still stand out. But with the price we’re paying here, it would feel like a bargain!
• The jasmine rice is exceptional—soft, slightly chewy, and perfectly cooked, just like in top-tier Thai restaurants. I haven’t found this quality of rice anywhere else in Melbourne.
• Steamed barramundi with soy sauce is well-executed, with a flavorful soy sauce that complements the fish. Adding the seafood dipping sauce makes it even better.
• Crispy barramundi with spicy salad is delicious—crispy outside, tender inside, with a bold and well-balanced dressing.
• Fried pork neck is the best I’ve had—fragrant, crispy on the outside, and not overly fatty. It was perfectly cooked and had that satisfying crunch.
• The prawn cakes are next-level. They’re not the usual minced prawn version but resemble the style of traditional Thai restaurants, with a blend of pork for extra umami. The seasoning is spot-on, with a rich aroma of “sam kler” (the Thai trinity of garlic, coriander root, and white pepper) that gives it an authentic depth of flavor. Perfectly paired with the sweet plum sauce.
• The omelet is tasty but a bit small.
I also tried the mango sticky rice, but it wasn’t my favorite at this restaurant.
I also tried the coconut ice cream, which was beautifully blue from butterfly pea (anchan)—a lovely touch. It came with khao tom mud, and I really loved it. The combo was absolutely delicious—the khao tom mud was rich (มัน) and fragrant (หอม) with coconut, pairing perfectly with the creamy, lightly sweetened ice cream. ***Highly recommend!***
The only downside? Service is a bit slow—but honestly, this is quite common in Thailand too! In fact, compared to some places back home, this is actually faster.
But my friend and I struggled with the food. The ingredients were authentic and had a nice texture, but the seasoning was way too heavy. Every dish was really salty (just like other reviews said), which was really a shame.
