Because of those great memories, we came here for our first meal this trip, but the experience was disappointing. The food was overly oily, sauces were already added, and items didn’t seem freshly prepared in batches anymore.
It’s unfortunate to see such a promising tempura place lose the quality that once made it special.
The servers were friendly, brought a pitcher of cold water as soon as you seated. Japanese pickles is also on the table. I was surprised that it was cool instead of room temperature.
My set came with miso soup, udon and tempura. Miso soup is flavorful. Udon’s soup was on the sweet side. There is a sauce for tempura. The tempura only has its own flavor. So if you don’t like it plain, use the tempura sauce or other seasoning.
Overall in my own opinion, friendly stuff, fast services. If you’re a local that who eats a lot, then one serving might not be enough for you.
Food is amazing and the tempura was delicious. The udon is on another level when combined with the sauce!
+ well controlled oil temperatures. The temperature doesn’t feel oily at all.
+ fresh ingredients. Shrimp was juicy and well textured. Same as the vegetables
+ sauce was well balanced.
+ we dined in with a toddler. Throughout the meal, the server (or owner?) was super considerate and kept bringing baby items (juice, origami) to keep our toddler entertained. We really appreciated it.
Tucked away downstairs in the Asian Food Hall, just steps from Waikīkī Beach, Tempura Kiki is a hidden gem delivering an authentic Japanese dining experience. The highlight of my visit was the wagyu tempura—delicately crisp on the outside, while the premium beef inside practically melted in my mouth. Truly unforgettable.
I also tried Hakutake Yuzumon, a remarkable Japanese liquor infused with yuzu and other citrus fruits, which paired beautifully with the tempura’s richness. The service was flawless—attentive without being intrusive—and the overall value was excellent for the quality provided.
Tempura Kiki offers a taste of Japan in the heart of Waikīkī, and I will gladly return on my next visit.
