We were seated in the coffee shop area, which was about half full. Our server greeted us immediately with a warm smile and welcoming personality. She promptly took our drink orders and returned shortly after to take our meal selections.
We started with an order of chicken livers. There was a bit of confusion because on a previous visit I had ordered a half portion of the appetizer. I asked for that again, but the server seemed unsure. When the bill arrived, we were charged the full $16 appetizer price. After checking with the manager, she informed us that half portions are no longer offered. Had that been clearly explained upfront, I likely would not have ordered them.
That said, the livers were outstanding — possibly the best I’ve ever had. I requested the onions well done, and they came out perfect. The livers were tender, buttery, and beautifully seasoned. Honestly, they were hearty enough to be a meal on their own.
My wife ordered the boned breaded perch lunch portion. We’ve had it several times before and it has always been excellent. The light breading allows the tender, flaky perch to shine. One small disappointment: there is now a $2 charge (noted on the menu) for melted butter to accompany the perch.
I ordered the breaded frog legs, which we’ve also enjoyed in the past. They were delicious again. The same $2 charge applies if you want melted butter with the frog legs.
Lunch portions include a side — mashed potatoes with gravy, the daily vegetable (green beans), and a choice of four slices of marinated beets or coleslaw. Unfortunately, the green beans were served at room temperature.
Aside from the misunderstanding regarding the appetizer portion, the service was excellent.
We will definitely be back.
To make matters worse, the manager seemed completely unaware of what was happening in the dining room and offered no real explanation or apology. For a place that’s supposed to be known for good service and classic food, tonight was a huge letdown. Definitely not worth the wait or the frustration.
Would highly recommend the restaurant including the great wait staff.
Only complaint was the the restaurant was incredibly quiet – no music or anything, which was a bit odd when people weren’t talking.
Baked potato was good.
The fish was not warm, and the warming plate was cold and not heated to keep the fish warm. And the side of drawn butter was cold. For what they are charging this was a disgrace. Evidently the cook doesn’t care about attention to detail or what he is serving.
Worst meal we ever had at Tiebels in 53 years. What happened?
