Checked out the Black-owned spot Tawanda’s Cafeteria in Jefferson City, and it was a solid experience overall!
The staff were super friendly and professional, which added a nice touch. The decor inside was on point and created a welcoming vibe.
For food, I tried:
• Fish – unfortunately, not my favorite. The batter was a bit too thick, and the fish lacked seasoning.
• Green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy – both were pretty good and flavorful.
• Cornbread – decent but didn’t seem as fresh as I’d hoped.
• Apple caramel cake – this was a winner! Tasty and a great way to end the meal.
One disappointing note: I was excited to try the egg rolls I saw featured on their website menu, but they were crossed out on the in-store menu, which was a letdown.
Parking here is not an issue, which makes visiting even easier. The prices are great, so I’d consider stopping back to give their chicken wings a try since the fish didn’t hit the mark for me.
Overall, it’s a nice spot to support, and I’m curious to explore more of their menu!

I had fish,..excellent. Mashed potatoes and gravy…excellent, and collard greens…excellent. My mother had BBQ chicken wings, excellent, mashed potatoes and sweet corn, all excellent. The two lady’s who waited on me was very friendly. Price was very reasonable. I’m planning on coming back in the future for other items on the menu. I recommend this place.

OHHHH WEEE this place is real good. I got their fried chicken and it’s perfect and has tons of flavor The only thing bad about the food is it will eventually be gone after I eat it!! It’s a gem in Jeff city and definitely worth checking out! *Side note* the prices are great too 5 stars and I don’t give 5 stars out lightly

The food was great! My wife got fish. My daughter got two hot honey chicken sandwiches. I got two pieces of dark meat chicken. We all got Mac an cheese. YOU NEED TO GET THE MAC AND CHEESE. Everything was excellent! I’ve eaten at just about every restaurant in Jefferson City and this place is hands down one of the best in town. It’s a small place, so plan on maybe doing a pick up order. The food is absolutely worth it.

They serve southern style fish here, not beer batter, and its crispy and delicious. My wife and I both had sweet potatoes and buttered carrots for sides and they were tasty. You probably can’t find this type of real deal soul cooking elsewhere in town. The two people working the day we went in were friendly and welcoming. I’ll be going back!
