Tavira is absolutely a hidden gem in the Bethesda community! I discovered this restaurant in the spring of 2024 and have since brought different friends here four times. I particularly adore the codfish balls and the cadeilada, and the red wine poached pears are also splendid. The fact that this restaurant is as old as I am speaks volumes about its well-deserved reputation. It’s a shame that its somewhat remote location for DC and its age mean it’s a little quiet, but I’ll definitely be maintaining a warm relationship with this restaurant for a long time to come.

The food for the main meal was delicious with generous portions. The atmosphere with the musicians playing was lovely. We arranged to have a small cake for a birthday celebration, a cake sized to serve 4-5 people. It tasted and looked good, and there was nothing exceptional about it. Upon getting the bill, much of my dismay, Tavira charged us $80 for a small cake!! I spoke to the server who said the manager told her to charge us $80!! This was exorbitant and a rip off. I didn’t want to make a scene and some people in our party needed to leave, so I paid it, left a 20% tip, because it wasn’t the server’s fault. But with this customer they won the war by way over charging us for the cake, but lost the battle, because we won’t eat there again. Customers be warned!!

The food was expensive- all main dishes were $31 or more, desserts were $10+. My wife ordered a Beef Madeira which was tough and tasteless, my sister ordered trout which was OK I guess and I chose a veal which was at most 3 oz, tough and barely edible. I don’t understand why this place has such high reviews despite the low-quality expensive food.

Last things – they immediately offer bottled water ($8) which you can say “no” since tap water is fine in the USA but this is a way to try to increase your bill further. If you are a group of 5+, a tip of 20% is mandatory. The Greek waitress has a heavily accented inaudible voice.

The restaurant was empty – now I know why.

Don’t be fooled by the strange location (and be patient attempting to find the parking lot!!) This place is worth it! Wonderful food and friendly service. Definitely makea reservation, it can get crowded. Love the warm bread, we inhaled it. I went with seafood everything and it was fresh and delicious. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the food. Highly recommend.

We have been going to Tavira for our wedding anniversary for many years. It was always “our place” where the food was great and the service old world. Last night we decided we need a new place. The restaurant was empty but for some reason we were seated next to the only other table that had diners. We waited 20 minutes for appetizers, a green salad filled with raw onions and a platter of rubbery clams. My husband had a very small serving of veal, which was advertised as a shank but had no bone. I had the bacalhao, which is a Portuguese specialty. It was not good. I am sad that this restaurant, which has hosted so many special nights for us, has declined.

The most important aspect of a restaurant is the food. Sadly, the food was not even acceptable, let alone meeting expectations. I ordered a beef steak, and my wife chose baked salmon served on risotto. Unfortunately, neither of us could eat more than a couple of bites, and most of the food on our plates remained untouched. I don’t understand why this place has such high reviews despite the low-quality food. It’s frustrating to pay a lot for something inedible – this place is so expensive, too.
Additionally, they had bought the cheesecake from a grocery store. See the photos that we took from their back shop area (or better to say the main entrance! That’s where you could enter from)

This spot seems like a local institution. They had live music- two guitarists playing in the background. The atmosphere was perfect and the food was really tasty as well. The restaurant is underground with no windows but the murals and lighting make it seem as if you’re transported to Portugal. Overall, an older clientele but a lovely spot.

This may become our favorite resto now that Christina’s has gone away.

We met some out-of-town friends here for dinner Friday and were treated to live guitar music in the main room. We sat in an adjoining room bc 2 of us wear hearing aids and are bothered by ambient noise; conversation was made easy.

Food, by all accounts, was very good. Three of us went for seafood, which is the store’s specialty; I had a steak offering, Portuguese style – lots of gravy. Presentation was not lost on any of the dishes but none of us ever thinks to take pictures, sorry.

One notable on the menu was poached pear with ice cream for dessert. Great for sharing and quite special.

AND – all the tables come clad in white tablecloths with white cotton napkins. Also candlelight. Twenty years ago, this was the norm, but today it’s a rarity and a gesture that, to me, indicates a proprietor’s commitment to a total dining experience. No one gets 5 stars out of me without them. Sorry not sorry.

Add to this covered parking in abundance just a few steps from the store’s door and you have the makings of a drama-free, thoroughly enjoyable evening. We will obviously be back.

Three of our four meals were good. Buy my wife ordered steamed clam. Two of the dozen were not opened. The server said they were sorry that they didn’t pry open those two. They weren’t raw oysters, they were steamed clams. If they don’t open, they are spoiled. WOW. Talk about food ignorance. I would never trust this place again.

I had high hopes for this restaurant, but the food was a complete letdown. We ordered a beef steak, and the baked salmon with risotto—both were practically inedible. We could barely take a few bites before giving up, leaving most of the food untouched. We informed the server that we didn’t like our meals, but they didn’t seem to care at all. For a place with such great reviews, I expected much better. On top of that, the prices are ridiculously high for the low quality served. It’s definitely not worth the money.

By the way, find the dessert that they claimed they baked themselves!

After all of our complaints, they charged us for full service and asked us to come back, LOL!
