On a Friday night, I had made a reservation and arrived at Tavern on State restaurant at 7:30. The restaurant was a bit crowded, but we were seated at a table on the beautiful alley adjacent to the restaurant. Luckily, there was a heater above our table, providing warmth for my wife, which was great. We decided to order 5 dishes, 2 cocktails, and a dessert.

An overall solid recommendation (4 stars), but we decided to round up to 5 for the sake of fact the restaurant wowed us with food inventiveness. Food was largely excellent (5 stars) though the service was average. Not bad, by any means, just not at the same quality as the food. (3.5 stars). $125 for 2 people with several share/appetizer plates, one entree, and a cocktail each.

Phenomenal meal experience- I was pleasantly surprised by how warm the garden patio was on a cool spring evening. I highly recommend a reservation as it’s a small and very popular restaurant.

Restaurant is very good. The basil pesto buratta appetizer was very fresh and simple, but well done and the bread was perfection. The Mrs. had the chicken dish which had an exceptional roasted corn puree as a base with summer squash. The corn was the highlight of that dish, such layers of flavor, it just all worked. I went the tavern route and got a lamb burger, which was a funky remix on the burger with the mint and whipped feta. The fries were flawless. Ample and perfectly executed. The only miss, if it could be classified as such, would be the desserts. We tried the Corn Ice Cream (really tasty and creamy) over a Cornbread with some kind of a grilled or cooked peach compote. It did have nuances of heat as there was some kind of a pepper in there which was interesting, and it had basil which popped, but in my opinion it needed an acidic burst like a berry (raspberry or currant would’ve been welcome). It was a bit one note of just sweet and creamy, and at $14 a dessert, I think it should really wow. We also had the blueberry buckle, which was essentially a crumb cake with fresh blueberries and a lemon curd. The lemon curd was excellent, truly delicious, but I think the dessert needed more of that in proportion to the buckle. Again at $14 a pop for dessert it should really stun. I would definitely go again. I do wish I had gone for one of the higher end type entrees, but I’ll be back.

One of the best culinary experiences we’ve ever had in CT. If you’re looking for an elevated dining experience.. Tavern on State is not to be missed. We visited for the first time on Friday and came back for the second time today, the following Tuesday. The restaurant is very small and intimate, with a dark and moody vibe. Every dish we’ve had so far has been phenomenal and inventive, with fresh ingredients and pleasantly unexpected flavors. Their drink menu is just as creative but they also make my boring regular margarita with a sugar rim perfectly. If you’re opting for desert, the chocolate caramel sea salt bar is divine. Service both times was wonderful and attentive, with genuine interest in patrons’ feedback on the dishes. This is an absolute staple place for us going forward.

I love the cocktail here! I want to try everything! The food is. Also delicious! I had pan-roasted prawns; both the quality and quantity were good. We also have Cesar salad, which is also good. I think the food here is a bit salty. And the atmosphere is really good here.

Great Ambiance, inside or along side and in back outside. Staff and servers are great. Friendly, helpful, and attentive. Food is very good. Great for work lunch to date night dinner. The only issue is the prices. Menu Items are way higher than they should be or needed. But I still would recommend if you haven’t been or a special occasion.

I cannot say enough about this spot. My favorite in New Haven. Fresh, sustainable, always changing menu. Chef is super cool and staff is always amazing, helpful, responsive. Cocktails are on point. Beer too. Great for a celebration, date night, or for a consistently juicy burger. I’ll never stop telling people about this spot. Reserve ahead for busy times as it’s hard to get in here.

My friend and I had planned to have dinner and ended up only having a starter and left. The service was absolutely atrocious. Downright rude and off putting. I realize that it is hard to find help but having servers who are not well put together and rude will only hurt your business. That being said, the food was good so the chef is doing his job well. Too bad the front of the house doesn’t match the back. Will not return.

Amazing food and service. The flavors were incredible with everything cooked to perfection. Definitely try the octopus, you won’t be disappointed. It’s amazing how tender they make it. No dish was one note, all had a complex pairing of flavors and textures making each a journey in itself. We went here with my parent’s for their anniversary and all agreed we would love to return. Sharing a bunch of small plates with a group is the best way to experience the wide range of interesting and inventive dishes offered here. This was rated best up and coming restaurant by VisitCT for a reason. Get there and try it out before this place gets too popular to get in! The intimate and well styled interior along with a casual patio / alley area give a nice range of settings to enjoy the delicious food. The best feeling you can get from a restaurant is feeling that every cent paid was more than worth it. You won’t be disappointed by Tavern on State.
