Tavern at the Mission delivers a polished, comfort-food-driven experience with mission views, a cozy fireplace, and pet-friendly patio vibes.
It is located directly across the street from the San Juan Capistrano Mission, with a stunning view of the Mission. Love it
The restaurant has a romantic and cozy vibe, offering comfortable seating and their outdoor patio is enormous, shaded, and even host to live music during Sunday brunch.
When we walked in , we were immediately greeted like we were a family.
Our server, was outstanding-professional, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. He offered thoughtful recommendations and provided detailed descriptions that made it easy to choose dishes , that we absolutely loved.
We ate inside and really enjoyed the cozy tavern ambiance.
The food was superb-delicious, beautifully presented, and full of flavor.
The restaurant offers a great menu with a lot of variety. The selections are unique and flavorful.
All of their food is prepared with the highest quality ingredients .
We have ordered : a French 75’s Onion Soup- it is the BEST French onion soup I have ever had! – A MUST TRY!
A Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle – lightly fried, very tender meat, not too greasy, comfort food perfection !
And a BBQ Salmon Tacos- fresh, flavorful, and well-balanced. ( no overpowering bbq sauce )
The salmon was moist and tasty.
The highlight of our meal was a delicious dessert:
A Hot Belgian Chocolate Soufflé- it is a MUST TRY! It is baked to order and served with yummy chocolate sauce- pure perfection!
The restaurant offers a great wine list , signature cocktails, beers, and other drinks. The bar has great happy hour and brunch specials- highly recommend!
Overall: This cozy tavern is just perfect for anyone. They have outdoor and indoor seating so you’ll be able to find just the right ambiance you are looking for.
We Highly recommend Tavern at the Mission for anyone looking for an outstanding dining experience !!!
Ashley provided excellent service. The food was on par. It was delicious and we enjoyed every bite of it. We’ll definitely come back every time we have a chance.
This was our first time dining here and had a very enjoyable experience. They are dog-friendly in their patio area. Which allowed us to comfortably have our dogs next to us. I had the fresh fish special and my wife had the salmon tacos. Both dishes were prepared nicely.
Special thanks to our wonderful server, Christi. Her excellent service made the experience very special!
Only reason the restaurant is getting 3 stars is because of our drink experience and follow up. One of our drinks came with a partly moldy strawberry. The waiter apologized and took it away as soon as I let her know. I was surprised the manager or bartender didn’t come over to check in after that.
From the moment we stepped in, Tavern at the Mission delivers a polished, comfort-food-driven experience with mission views, a cozy fireplace, and pet-friendly patio vibes.
We were served by Mariah B, who nailed it—attentive without hovering, upbeat, proactive, and clearly proud of the brand. She ensured our timing was perfect and checked in just enough. She’s as good as the top-rated servers other reviewers mention.
Food breakdown:
– Lunch Combo: Turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich with a cup of soup and side salad – fresh, flavorful, and well-balanced.
– Prime Rib Dip: Juicy, tender prime rib with rich au jus—comfort food perfection.
– French Onion Soup: Melted cheese, deep onion flavor, and just the right amount of savory.
– Side salad: Crisp, fresh, no filler.
Every dish was a solid 10/10.
Why it stands out:
✅ Ambience – rustic, elegant, mission-style charm
✅ Service – Mariah B was flawless, and others like Jen and Cameran get similar praise
✅ Chef-driven menu – comfort staples with quality ingredients
✅ Location – beautiful views, ideal for a relaxed lunch or upscale dinner
Bottom line: Tavern at the Mission delivers where it counts—service, food, and setting. If you’re looking for a consistently excellent experience, this is your spot. We’ll be back, and we’ll be asking for Mariah again.
There was no indication of last orders for drinks and was reluctant to offer dessert. All the tables were busy when we arrived and there appeared to be plenty of staff. Our group was 10 people and a mandatory gratuity of 20% was added. The receipts also had an additional suggested gratuity
