We had a wonderful experience at Tastings of Charlottesville’s wine dinner on 2/24, as a belated Valentine’s Day celebration. The evening focused on wines from Burgundy — specifically Côtes de Beaune and Pommard — and featured producer Domaine Rougeot.

We really love learning about wine (especially when it comes to pairing it with food) and we value educational experiences that are both insightful and free of pretension. We know that’s a delicate balance to strike, and Tastings absolutely hit the mark!

The evening started with some Catsmo smoked salmon canapés, paired with one of the best traditional-method sparklings I’ve had: Vitteaut-Alberti Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Blanc de Blancs. Trust me when I say you need to get a bottle!

The first picture showcases the flight of White Burgundies with a really delicious and cozy coq au vin. Our favorite wine was the third, Domaine Rougeot’s 2022 Saint-Romain “La Combe Bazin.” The nose alone was one of the most gorgeous I’ve experienced in quite some time — truly a stunning bouquet.

The second picture is of the flight of Pinot Noirs. With the reds, we enjoyed a lovely petite tenderloin and “Ma’s Scalloped Potatoes.” Of the second flight, our favorite wine was again the third. This time, it was Domaine Rougeot’s 2022 Pommard “Clos des Roses,” a natural, organic Pinot Noir from a walled monopole vineyard.

The evening concluded with a thoughtfully-curated cheese plate, Deb’s cookie of the week (a yummy oatmeal raisin), and a delightful taste of 2016 Bouchard Père & Fils Pommard.

We *thoroughly* enjoyed ourselves! The food, wine, and company were excellent. We can’t wait to visit Tastings for another wine dinner in the future!

If you’re a wine nerd this is your Shangri-la! We had a great visit at Tastings while in Charlottesville for the weekend. Bill is an excellent proprietor. The selection of wines and vintages were awesome to sort through, and we had some great conversations with Bill and other customers while we were there. The shop makes you feel like you’re hunting for buried treasure, and we definitely found some awesome vintaged wines. I can’t wait to come back for my next visit!

Tastings has a varied menu and it’s always very good. Tonight we had the smoked trout appetizer. The trout was done just right and accompanied with golden (yellow?) beets. Excellent! Main courses were Seafood Louis and Scallops. Both were scrunptious. We had the Chardonnay wine flight which went well with the seafood. Service as always was excellent.

Don’t be fooled by the garish decor at the restaurant, the selection of wines is impressive. As Alley Light was packed Saturday night, I decided to check out the local wine bar instead and made the right call! It’s not a fancy wine bar with different flights to choose from with cheese or chocolate pairings. There’s plenty of food on the menu though.

Although you can order a glass of wine, I recommend shopping around the store and picking out a bottle! There are at least 300 bottles to choose from ranging from local wines to Europe. We enjoyed a glass of red wine and port.

The owner, white bearded man, is a wine connoisseur as he’s been selling wine for 44 years. He kindly helped us pick out a sweet bottle of dessert wine, which we brought home and thoroughly enjoyed.

Although I had a fun experience, I think the restaurant needs a makeover with updated furniture and a streamlined menu for small food pairings. Tastings has a lot of potential to deliver a full throttle experience.

High mark-ups and not particularly helpful owner. I like shopping local so stopped in to buy a bottle of wine for a special occasion. The old world wine selection was impressive. I admitted that I was a bit of a wine novice and rather than taking the time to explain the differences between the bottles he had, the owner simply listed off his most expensive brands and sold me one of the his most expensive, repeatedly stating it was “Fabulous” even when I asked specifically asked why it was so. He also talked up the special box it was in (it was obviously damaged but out of politeness I didn’t say anything). I bought it because I wanted to support local business and wanted to show appreciation for his time, but later found that he was selling it at a $60 dollar mark-up compared to another local wine shop back home.

Great old world wine selection. Wandered in mid day to see what’s up. The gentleman tending bar was uninterested in our presence and I got the vibe he was annoyed by us. Didn’t eat but the menu looked really good. Hopefully the gentleman was just having a rough day.

Great stock of wines–but beware of William C. Curtis, the owner. If he is the wine expert he advertises himself to be, his palate must be where all his sensitivity has clustered. In this store this morning, to buy a bottle of wine for my 65th birthday, Curtis was brusque. I called the store several hours later to lodge a complaint, Curtis answered, listened to my version of my morning encounter with him, and then told me “to go somewhere else, if I don’t like how I was treated.” He reminded me, “I know my wines.”

My only regret is that I did not take the clerk’s advice to buy a second bottle of the wine he recommended (as he knowingly suggested would be my regret). Small, independent shops live by the quality of their staff and the recommendations they provide to customers. This place knocks it out of the park.
