The Tartan Room first opened its doors back in 1959 as a classic dinner house, and now resides tucked away in a corner of a bustling shopping center in the City of Orange. With plush leather seating and subtle nods to Scotland, this dimly lit dining den winks at a lost era. We welcome friends, family, and our faithful followers to join us for gorgeous cuts of prime rib, stiff drinks and cheeky banter.

Fast forward four decades of blissful ignorance, and a high school friend casually drops this culinary bombshell on me:
“Wait… you’ve NEVER been to the steakhouse?”
Naturally, I grabbed my family and sped over faster than you can say “medium rare.”
We were greeted by a server who has apparently worked there for forty years — yes, forty — which is almost as long as I’ve been alive and completely clueless about this place. When we sheepishly admitted we’re locals who had no idea this restaurant existed, she looked at us like we’d just told her we’d never heard of oxygen.
Then the food came out, and let me tell you… it felt like home.
There’s a reason they’ve been in business this long — they’re that good.
I ordered the Chef’s Special Steak and Onion Soup, and it was nothing short of a culinary delight. The steak was cooked to perfection—juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. Paired with the rich and savory French Onion Soup, it made for a meal that satisfied both my taste buds and my nostalgia for hearty, traditional fare.
This hidden gem welcomes guests with open arms, offering gorgeous cuts of prime rib, stiff drinks, and a sprinkle of cheeky banter that makes the dining experience all the more enjoyable. It’s a perfect place for friends, family, or anyone wanting to step into a time where the focus was pure quality and comfort-driven dining.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Tartan Room is a delightful escape into classic dining, bringing a taste of Scotland to the heart of Orange. Definitely a must-visit for steak lovers and those who appreciate a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
To my surprise the food here was pretty good. There was everything from pasta to steak to prime rib and fish. At my table we ordered a cheeseburger with fries, open face prime rib sandwich, open face prime rib sandwich with onion rings, and also the bone-in pork chop entree. Everything was actually very delicious. I would say my favorite thing of the entire night was actually the food. Everything was flavorful and delicious. My table ordered 4 alcoholic beverages from the bar…. 2 of them were extremely weak and the other 2 drinks were average.
Although I absolutely love the live music here, the magician was amazing, it was a bit too loud. By the time I was done with my meal and left, my throat hurt from yelling during my conversations at my table. That’s not a fun feeling but I guess this could just be a personal preference type of issue.
If you’re coming here with a group in which you want to drink and be in more of a fun party Vibe then definitely hit this place up. If you’re coming here on a date night I would say don’t. Just because you cannot have a conversation in here while the music is on. Overall I would say if you have not tried this restaurant then definitely give it a go because the food was delicious. If I was reading this restaurant on food alone it would have gotten four stars but due to all the other factors and only got three.
The prime steak was tough but a good flavor. Potato was pretty good.
The time I came in service was really fast.
Service was professional, quick, and attentive. Food was delicious, delivered as ordered, and in a timely manner.
Room had booths perfect for dining but also a large bar with cocktail tables and live band area. Dining area was intimate but great lighting for photos.
Menu had a great selection of meats and seafood with a handful of offerings for each.
Buon Appetito, Piatto Pulito
I usually come for drinks, but we decided to have dinner. Lindsay was our bartender that night and a great host! I was craving pasta and ordered the shrimp pasta. I personally would have liked more garlic in the pasta, but that is just my personal preference. My date had the Filet with twice baked potato. I really did enjoy the Caesar salad. Very fresh, and the dressing was addictive. We skipped dessert. We were too full at that point. I appreciate that their martinis are not crazy expensive. We paid $10 roughly for Titos.
Tuesday, they have a Titos night and discount, and Wednesday, they have a discount on bottled wine. All the employees there are friendly and all about service. Laura and Nick are also great bartenders! See you guys next time!
And I beg this restaurant and indeed, ALL restaurants that have live bands, please LOWER THE VOLUME! I have never understood why the decibel level is set to deafening every time a live band performs in a restaurant. I am there to eat and enjoy the company of the people I am with, not shout over the keyboards. It isn’t enjoyable and a restaurant would never play their piped music that loud so why the band music? I’m sorry, I may be picking on the Tartan Room because they had their band playing when I was there, but it just detracts from the overall experience.
