We stopped in on a whim and were very pleased with our experience. We had a Ruben with macaroni salad and a barbecue sandwich with fries (aka The Maclean) – both were made fresh and absolutely delicious. My husband’s bbq had a nice smoky flavor that we both really enjoyed. Our waitress was very attentive and the absolute sweetest lady. The wait time to be seated was less than 10 minutes, which was completely understandable considering the smaller size of the restaurant, them being one of the many places now affected by a lack of available workers and it being close to closing time on a Sunday. We’re so glad we found this place and look forward to coming back next time we’re in town. Thanks for a great meal y’all!

On our way back from a wedding in the mountains, we stopped in Linville, at the foot of Grandfather Mountain, to have brunch on a Sunday. There’s not much in this tiny village, but the parking lot of The Tartan was so full that we had to park a block up the street. When I arrived at the door a hand written sign apologized that there was limited staff working so there may be a long wait.I signed my party in to the book. Yes, I had to sign myself in rather than tell someone who I was. And we waited in the parking lot, expecting an hour wait or more. In less than 30 minutes a charming young man with a broad smile called our name and showed us to our table. (I noticed later that he was also a waiter.)After we had been seated, the 2 waitresses that I could see looked very tired, I suspect that was because we arrived after the Sunday brunch rush. Our waitress arrived in a few minutes and as cheerily as she could asked for our drink order. A few minutes later she brought them back and just as cheerily asked for our food order.Again, we expected a long wait to eat our food due to the shortage of staff. However, in about 15 minutes our food arrived, with our waitress apologizing profusely for the non-existent delay! And the food was delicious! It was general diner fare: omelettes, biscuits, turkey club, etc. But everything had flavor and pizazz, not bland and usual. And the warm homemade apple pie at the end topped the meal.To top it all off, the staff was exceptional. There was only a few of them working the whole restaurant (5 plus the kitchen staff that I could see). They worked hard, look tired, but treated their customers like the guests they are. True Southern hospitality even in difficult circumstances. If you are traveling in the mountains near Linville, or spending the day at Grandfather Mountain, make sure you plan a meal at The Tartan. You won’t regret it!(Oh, and be sure to take some time before you order to read the fascinating history of Linville and Grandfather Mountain on the menu.)

This restaurant has incredible food. We drove 1800 miles and would have been very disappointed if the tartan wasn’t open. Wish it was closer to home, I’d have those great biscuits and gravy every morning.

We ate here on vacation-Waited about 45 min because we heard it was good. I ordered a tuna fish sandwich, the family ordered different meals…. It took about 30 min to get our drinks and the food was less than average. We asked for butter-never got it. The waitress was older, friendly, but awful at her job. We had to ask twice for refills. And had to ask another server for our bill. An absolute waste of time. Deservingof zero stars.

I will start by saying the breakfast was very good. Eggs cooked perfect, liver mush was crispy on the outside. Delicious. 5 stars to the cook for sure. The service was not so great. Waited 5-10 min before we could order drinks. It was almost an hour before we got our food from the time we walked in. Service 3 stars. Decorated nice and pretty clean. We will be back for sure.Edit; Just left and the food was great. Service was still subpar.

We visited recently visited the Tartan Restaurant for our Fall 2020 trip to the mountains. The restaurant was very busy when we got there and we had to wait about 30 minutes outside.Once we were seated we placed our order and got our food. The main reason I gave them 3 stars was because the orders didn’t come out as we requested. My hard over eggs were slightly undercooked, my wife had to ask for her biscuit again and my hash browns we really overcooked. They did awesome on my step-son’s order!Overall the food was still good and if it weren’t for the items I mentioned, I would have given them 5 stars. We definitely try them again on a future visit.

We went Wednesday morning as soon as they opened. We got a very nice waiter who was prompt and answered any of our questions. The restataurant was clean, and the food was prepared well. If I end up out this way again I’d visit.
