Growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I was totally spoiled by the food — especially the green chile and red chile that you just can’t replicate anywhere else. Even though I’m a California native by birth, I spent my most formative years in New Mexico, and that shaped my palate in a permanent way.
Over the last 20 years living in the Bay Area, I’ve been on a quiet mission: every time a friend from high school or middle school in New Mexico came to visit, I’d try to find a restaurant here that could even remotely live up to what we were raised on. I’d take them to places I thought might pass muster — and every time, they were politely disappointed. So was I.
But today changed everything.
I think I may have just found the best Mexican restaurant I’ve ever experienced in California — hands down. And no, I’m not exaggerating.
Taqueria La Comales Mexican Grill in Oakland
• ️ They will make it spicy if you want it — not just California-spicy, but real-deal chile heat.
• Fresh, high-quality ingredients that taste home-cooked, not mass-produced.
• Extremely affordable — the kind of value that’s almost impossible to find in the Bay now.
• Authentic flavor — I mean it. The chile here sings. It reminded me of home.
If you grew up on Hatch green chile and are constantly chasing that familiar, soulful flavor, this is your spot. I can’t even tell you how good it felt to finally taste something that honored where I come from.

Been going here for over 10 years now, never had a bad experience, food is always so good and tasty, and there priced haven’t even raised, you get a good amount of food for a good price. The staff here is always nice and pack ur food. Pictured is a burrito bowl and the super quesadillas. Highly recommend the burritos/wet burritos here as well! 10/10

Great food I order Super Nachos and my girl order a Tongue Super Quesadilla. I recommend the nachos but my girl said the Quesadilla was bad. The place is small parking on the street is limited but parking is available.
