If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food that tastes like it came straight from abuela’s kitchen, this is the spot. Everything from the freshly made tortillas to the perfectly seasoned meats was packed with flavor. The salsa? Just the right kick. The portions? Generous, but you’ll still want to lick the plate clean.
It’s a small, family-run place, so don’t expect fancy decor—expect great food. The staff made us feel right at home, and you can tell they put their heart into every dish.
If you know, you know. If you don’t—trust me, you need to try it.
Well, that’s not what we got at El Manto.
Unfortunately, the food was a huge disappointment – it was so very bland and appeared to have zero salt in it. It was shocking just how severely all our plates lacked salt. It’s as if none was used at all during cooking. Talk about busted expectations! I truly wish the restaurant owners would realize that the model were they cook with no salt and let the customer add it on the plate leads to a terrible experience. Yes, you can add salt to your plate, but you’re only adding it to the surface of the food. The inside of each piece is still terribly bland. You have to use salt and seasonings DURING cooking, so that your food gets infused with them inside out.
My spouse ordered a birria bowl – expecting a bowl of stew, served in consome, with tortillas on the side, as their menu promises. Instead, it was a small amount of fairly dry, flavorless meat parked next to a pile of rice and beans on a flat plate. Absolutely not what we expected, and since we don’t eat rice or beans, the spouse left hungry. Imagine expecting a bowl of hearty stew, only to be served something completely different.
Additionally, we were really bothered by a screaming baby at another table. Loud non stop screeching at the top of their lungs from the time we sat down until the time we left, and nobody tried to console it, rock it, feed it, or perhaps walk out with it to avoid bothering others. Babies are a part of life, naturally, but this was utterly unbearable. A very loud distressed crying that went on for an hour, parents acting as if nothing is happening. Now, before you say a restaurant has no control over who brings babies over and whether they try to keep them quiet. This was not a customer! In fact, we were the only customer at that hour. The screaming baby belonged to some family members of the owners. There were many of them camping out at a table, as if it were a living room, just having a nice time. For us, having just come from work, tired and hungry, looking to relax and have a dinner in a quiet atmosphere, it was a non-stop nightmare. Given that our order took a good while to be prepared, we spent about an hour there, and during that entire time the baby was relentless. I left with a massive headache.
The fact that the service was welcoming and friendly unfortunately didn’t balance out the long wait, the torturous atmosphere, and the borderline inedible food. We will not be coming back. It is killing me to be leaving a negative review for a small business. We always choose to support small local businesses! However, we expect some value in return. Here, we felt like we wasted a good chunk of money but didn’t get the experience nor the nutrition we came to get. Should have gone to another tried and true local establishment instead.
