My wife and I visited today (6/29/25). The host (and our waiter) was very friendly and made us feel welcomed and right at home. We were seated, given menus and promptly served what I believe were house made tortilla chips (which were crispy and delicious, and not too salty) and what I know was house made salsa, which was incredibly flavorful, with a nice amount heat. It also had the perfect consistency. Not too thin. Not too thick).
My wife and I went with burritos, she the California, and I the Campechana. We both went with the option of having our burritos smothered in both the green and red chile (known as “Christmas style”, by the way). The green chile is vegetarian (as are the tortillas) and is amazing! The red chile has the incredibly tasty addition of chipotle peppers for a nice smokiness that really stands out and compliments the other ingriedients. There is also a nice amount of heat in both.*
The burritos were also pretty hefty and I was glad that I’d had a light breakfast. The menu items are reasonably priced and we both definitely felt like we got our money’s worth.
If you are familiar with Los Pepes, you should give their brick and mortar restaurant, Taqueria del Barrio, a try. If you aren’t familiar with Los Pepes then you should give both a try. Treat yourself to some incredible Mexican food. You deserve it!
*They also have a salsa bar with a variety of freshly made salsas.
The things I didn’t like were the chips were pretty bad. They need better chips. The service is pretty slow. It seems like they are still trying to figure out how to run a sit down restaurant. The people with me got quesodillas. They commented they didn’t have enough cheese. They brought out 2 of the 3 entrees, then I had to wait a fair bit for mine. They add a 2% fee for credit cards that I didn’t see posted. The fountain drinks are $4.50. That is the most expensive I have ever seen. With tax and tip for 3 people, the sodas would have been $6 a piece $18 total. Ouch! We drank water.
I’ll try them again because they are close to our house, and I liked the food. My daughter said she wouldn’t eat there again.
It’s the most perfect little hole-in-the-wall restaurant! Sometimes these late-night date nights go awry because we’re going in so close to closing time (which we don’t like doing, so often don’t go). Not this taqueria! Our meals were delicious. And bonus, the green chile doesn’t have pork so I was able to enjoy it, too! Aside from that deviation from tradition, everything else tasted like my Tia was in the kitchen. And the fresh salsas!! Delicious.
Our waitress was a doll as well! Leslie was totally fine with us “practicing” our spanish (go Duo Lingo!), bringing the most delightful energy despite the late hour. We also greatly appreciated the music being a reasonable volume so we could enjoy each other’s jokes and unwind from the week with laughter.
Definitely our new fav spot. Thanks Taqueria del Barrio for a special date night.
