Red or green? Not here.
As a Native New Mexican I was EXTREMELY EXCITED to know this opened in the area. My excitement quickly dissipated after stopping in.
I stopped in the first week of opening and ordered a burrito and taco to go. The first thing that caught my attention was the lack of “red or green” options. The second thing that caught my attention were the high prices. The third thing was the absence of Hatch chili.
NM food is known for two things; red or green, and Hatch chili.. but really the red or green is in reference TO Hatch chili.
When ordering food in NM that typically has chili, you are always asked red or green as the chilis can be served as red or green and sometimes contain different flavor profiles.
No where on this menu is there food that states can be served with red or green chili, it’s one or the other e.g. red chili chicken, green chili pork. Also NO WHERE is there Hatch chili.
I was hoping that the high price would have been justified, unfortunately with the lack of beans and rice it wasn’t.
Many if not all restaurants in NM serve beans and rice as a complimentary side to all entree’s. Even Mexican restaurants in the area do the same.
I GREATLY Appreciate the efforts at bringing NM food to the Burgh, but there seems to be a misstep or marketing faux pas calling it New Mexican.
The food I did have was good, but hard to justify another visit with the listed prices.
The uniqueness of NM food was desired. Where are the gorditas, sopapillas, huevos rancheros, and HATCH chili?

I fortunately had a chance to speak with the owner, Chris. He seems like a very wonderful person, as we talked and lamented on both our NM beginnings. I suggested a few things as I did in this review, I only hope it’s seen as positive criticism.

The first thing about this place is the atmosphere! And in reality it’s actually two restaurants. One that serves food and one that serves adult beverages. The great offerings by Big Spring spirits perfectly compliments the delicious food offerings of Taqueria Acosta. I decided to have the enchilada which was outstanding! They are served in a unique way such that they are layered with a fried egg on top. They include rice that is out of this world, and beans that are almost as good. As good as the enchiladas were, when I glanced across the table at the burrito that literally flows over the plate, I was then assured that the amount of flavor was equal to its volume. Not sure what else I can add, the food was great and so was the service. I highly recommend!

Great space located within Big Springs ♨️ Spirits. Top quality food! Raised in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM and only recently came to the Pittsburgh area. Taqueria Acosta has gone the extra mile and not only replicated the delicious food from back home but has created a unique and creative experience that goes beyond my expectations. Everything was freshly prepared and the meats taste like they are slow cooked to perfection. I highly recommend coming to enjoy this delicious food in person as the presentation is beautiful, the portions are generous and the food quality is top notch. I had the stacked chicken enchiladas with a fried egg on top. I’ll be back to try the Tostada as it came highly recommended from some regulars that I met at the bar. They do trivia every Wednesday.

Have visited several times and although New Mexican food is new to me, I absolutely loved everything I’ve had here! They also have VEGAN options (my daughter is Vegan) which is so rare! Most restaurants in the area offer salads or an Impossible burger but not at Taqueria Acosta!!!
They also offer more traditional dishes like salmon and ribs and these dishes will blow your mind!!
The servers and the cocktails are very good too-kudos to Big Springs and Taqueria Acosta!
