Cozy little spot with a friendly neighborhood feel. The sushi was fresh and tasty, with all the favorites plus some unique combinations. I cannot wait to try more. Slightly more expensive but worth it. The ramen is not traditional but still good. We did have to wait for a table on a Wednesday since it is a smaller place, so I would recommend calling ahead for reservations.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever eaten! The Wu Island Style roll had such a wonderful composition of flavor, with the garlic and house made eel sauce (I think?) coming on slowly over time, it made me smile uncontrollably to have the flavors composed over time like that. The bluefin nigiri and other nigiri was phenomenal as well, perfectly balanced. Service was lovely as well. Looking forward to next time c:

It is honestly so sad how so many restaurants in Humboldt thrive on mediocrity.
This was my third time in and I wanted to show a friend how good the sushi was and cute the atmosphere was.
We ordered a couple rolls, pork gyoza, and spicy chicken miso.
The servers took incredibly long time and borderline unprofessional. I saw servers with sleeveless tops which is not ServSafe compliance. With a restaurant that has such expensive prices and nice ambiance I would hope that they would want provide service that matches the prices.
When the food arrived everything tasted great except the spicy chicken miso ramen. It borderline had mo flavor? The chicken was dry/flavorless and shredded, and the noodles with subpar at best. I communicated to the server of the poor flavors and she seemed annoyed. As a server I always hope the customers communicate any unsatisfactory parts of the meals so the establishments I work can maintain quality and consistency. She said nearly nothing out of the interaction and charged the soup even though I only took two bites of the inedible soup.
I will not be returning to or recommending this restaurant.

My lady and I just enjoyed dinner here for the first time. That mango roll really stuck out in mind as a deliciously unique treat. Great job converting this space into a cozy and comfortable quality sushi restaurant. Will be back for more.

Best Sushi in Humboldt! So stoked Jacob has opened his own restaurant. Pictured… The Pretty Roll, The Mango Dango Roll and Hamachi Curry Carpaccio.

UPDATE: Went to the 8 course dinner last night (Nov 21, 2024 – the menu changes almost every time they do it!)… SO DAMN GOOD! It’s Omakase style so you order drinks and come along on a Sushi Adventure! Limited to 10-15 people (I think) and reservation only. Check out the site and get on the list. Best food & dining I’ve had in 10 years!

Rumors of Sushi MAKING classes too… ask ’em.

Jan 2025 – Just added a photo of “Yam That’s Good!” and they are!!

Tanukis Den is wonderful. Such a cool spot in Arcata. The food is amazing. Jacob has always been my favorite sushi chef. So glad he got his own spot. 10/10 fully recommend.

Came here for lunch and went for the Godzilla-rito, and we loved it! The assortment of fish in it tasted so fresh and delicious. It’s definitely big enough to share and very filling Looking forward to coming here again soon for the sushi and more!

Quirky little dining room with some really unique touches (we liked the coat rack and artwork). Love there’s an outdoor area for warmer weather. Definitely the best sushi we have experienced in HumCo by far. Service was friendly although a bit flustered and slow. Pricey menu and worthwhile!

First time there for my husband’s birthday dinner, we made reservations for the 8 course plated seating and holy moly what a treat. The atmosphere, the food, the super friendly staff and solo sushi artist Jacob, creating edible art for all to enjoy. Doing the 8 course meal was amazing due to the fact nobody had to make any decisions, just sit back and enjoy good conversation and try flavor combinations that will leave you wanting more. He has recreated a little slice of Japan for us here in Arcata, it was raining so no out door seating this time. As we walked up the red shade sales and yellow ginkgo leaves set the mood for an intimate dining experience. A truly den-like space Jacob has created a uniquely welcoming and warm space to enjoy. And the toilet does need an honorable mention. Heated seat, bidet, more buttons than I’ve ever seen. There’s even a nod to Godzilla in the décor that gives a bit of whimsy. Because food should be enjoyed with laughter, joy and yes…some delicious sake.
