Tandoor Chapel hill Indian Restaurant on East Franklin Street has had a face-lift. For the past 30 years 1301 East Franklin Street has gone thru many reincarnations and this one is truly the most colorful and delicious. It’s all about the experience says Terry Melville, who masterminded the rejuvenation of Tandoor along with Tandoor’s Baleinder Bhupal, better known as Binda to his loyal customers. Vivid Indian-colored walls and doors of Mango Orange, Kashmiri Hot Pink and Bombay Yellow, trimmed in Peacock Blue replace the formerly drab off-white and brown decor.
The redesigned dining room is more open, yet the new leather-tooled paisley booths create an intimate and cozy setting for quiet conversation while guests enjoy the aroma.
Mostly Northern Indian eats in a colorful room with Bollywood videos overhead, plus a lunch buffet.

As someone who has seen many restaurants come and go in the area, this is the one that has (by far) been my go to anytime I want a good meal. The service is excellent, some of the nicest people I have gotten the chance to meet. They’re happy to answer any questions, make accommodations, and make the meal experience as satisfying as possible. The food is otherworldly, the flavor is astounding. I have gotten this for lunch, dinner with friends and family, and a quick takeout. I cannot speak highly of how amazing this spot is, truly the best restaurant and food in Chapel Hill.

Temporarily closed for renovations, according to a banner at the entrance.
Best Indian in Chapel Hill, for the price.
It’s hole in the wall with very little ambiance and a funky bathroom, which I try to not use. But the family who runs it is delightfully friendly, and the food is generous and very tasty. Best deal on samosas and the weekday lunch buffet.

For under $12, you don’t typically find a decent buffet, but this one was good for a quick lunch. There are mostly chicken and vegetable options. Naan served at the table was very good. On the buffet I tried a variety of dishes. The chicken Tikka was the best dish I had that day. Good flavor, great sauce, and seemed to have good quality chicken. The chicken curry wasn’t as flavorful as I expected. Pretty one dimensional. It could really use some heat. Tandoori chicken was also bland and not hot, temperature wise. I tried a few of the vegetable stews. They were all fine.
Take out from here may be a better option, but for a quick and cheap lunch, it worked.
The location is unassuming, at best. You enter the side of a building and then go downstairs. Doesn’t really look like much from the outside. It’s clean but very outdated. Some of the seating area is used for storage. This could definitely be more appealing with some effort.
Service was good. Since it’s a buffet, you don’t need much but my plate was cleared quickly after I finished. The lady working answered questions I had about items on the buffet also.
Overall, it was a good experience at a very good price.

First time here and I absolutely loved the place! Their lunch buffet is literally the best indian food deal in the Chapel Hill area! Highly cost-effective, there are quite a variety of options, especially in the vegetarian section, both suited with rice and naan. Crispy fresh-fried pakodas and golab jamuns were the cherry on top. The only thing is you have to come quite early for the buffet (11am – 2pm, which is quite early for lunch, atleast for me). The ambience is also pleasant and would the decor keeps reminding you of the restaurants in India. Highly recommended, would definitely visit again!

Delicious lunch. Since it was Saturday I thought they might not have the lunch buffet but it was available. Lots of options. I loved that the food wasn’t spicy but definitely full of flavor. The naan bread was delicious. the restaurant is actually downstairs from street level.

Loved it here! I have been searching for an Indian buffet to let my 6 year old try different types of Indian and choose what she likes. This was perfect and the Korma was a huge hit for both of us. The food in the buffet was not spicy. The people working were wonderful and showed us what was vegetarian and what my kid may be most likely to enjoy. They brought out fresh naan for us. The mango lassies were excellent so we got some to go as well. Pulling in we thought it looked closed, but walk in the door and go down stairs and it is a big restaurant. Definitely a surprise based on the outside. Can’t wait to come back.

The food is amazing no matter what you get you’ll know that you’re always getting great fresh food and it’s always what you ordered. The menu is well written and the prices are very reasonable and competitive. If you go for lunch the buffet is kept full and the food is kept sanitary and hot. The service is great they’re always thinking about you when you’re eating there. The atmosphere is really good the elements of the room and the tapestry make you really embrace the food and enjoy it.

Bollywood meat thali is such a steal. Can get three different types of curry, samosa, naan, and sauces by $25. The only thing I didn’t like is the goat curry tasted super stale… could tell that these three were preprepared and ready to serve anytime and can get unfresh from time to time.
