I stopped by Tan Tan in Houston with pretty average expectations, and honestly, that’s about how the experience turned out neither amazing nor terrible, just okay overall. It’s one of those places you hear about a lot, especially for late-night Vietnamese food, so I figured I’d finally give it a try.

One thing I did appreciate right away was the cleanliness. The restaurant itself was decent, and the bathrooms were clean and well kept, which might seem like a small thing but definitely matters when you’re dining out. It made the place feel more comfortable and taken care of, so points there.

As for the food, the portions were fair for the price. You’re not getting huge plates, but you’re also not leaving feeling like you got ripped off. For what you pay, the amount of food makes sense, especially if you’re just looking for something filling without expecting anything over the top.

Taste-wise, the food was fine but not super memorable. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing really wowed me either. It felt like food you’d grab when you’re hungry and want something warm and familiar, not necessarily something you’d crave days later. It got the job done, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression.

Service was pretty average. The staff wasn’t unfriendly, but they weren’t especially warm or attentive either. It felt a bit rushed at times, and there wasn’t much interaction beyond taking the order and dropping off the food. Not a deal breaker, but it didn’t add much to the experience.

The vibe at Tan Tan is very casual. It’s not a place you go for ambiance or a special night out. Depending on the time, it can be busy and a little loud, which fits the late-night spot reputation. It’s more of a quick, no-frills type of place.

Overall, I’d give Tan Tan a solid three stars. The clean bathrooms and fair portions are definite positives, but the food and service were just average. It’s a decent option if you’re nearby or looking for a late-night bite, but not somewhere I’d go out of my way to visit again

In my opinion, There are two main signs of a great Chinese restaurant:
1. Most of the patrons are speaking an Asian language.
2. You have no idea what they’re eating—or where those dishes are on the menu!

That said, in Tan Tan Restaurant there are always familiar favorites like fried rice and walnut chicken—and Tan Tan Restaurant has those dishes freshly made for you and many more to choose from. Beyond the classics, they serve authentic dishes that might be less known to Western diners but all are packed with bold, delicious flavors. Portions are generous, the staff is friendly, and service is quick.

Bottom line: You can’t go wrong with Tan Tan Restaurant for flavorful, satisfying Western-Chinese dishes right in the heart of Houston’s Chinatown.

Food quality has gone downhill. Even their house special rice cake isn’t the same anymore. It used to be my favorite rice cake. I would only eat it at Tan Tan. Now it’s soggy, not crispy like before and they’re very stingy with the pickled radish. Their chili oil sauce isn’t the same as before either, quality and freshness has gone down. I am breaking up with Tan Tan. Chia tay với Tân Tân!

It’s nostalgic place for many, a Houston gem and the food is still on point after all these years. The staff is friendly and efficient. It doesn’t take long to get your food and the place is big enough to accommodate a small or large party. It’s clean and the parking is made up of mostly their customers. This will always be a spot I’m down to go to. When I used to live far away, I’d come back to eat here. It’s like home.

Tan Tan, a Houston OG, earns a 5-star review for its incredible food and service I’ve loved for over 20 years! The A1 banh bot chien is a standout, with crispy golden edges and a soft chewy interior, paired with a tangy dipping sauce that elevates every bite. The Cantonese sweet and sour strikes a perfect balance, its bright tangy sauce coating tender meat and crisp vegetables, delivering nostalgic comfort in every mouthful. The crispy egg noodle with shrimp is a textural delight, featuring crunchy noodles topped with plump juicy shrimp in a savory sauce that ties it all together. The chow fun with beef and Chinese broccoli is a flavor powerhouse, with smoky tender beef and vibrant greens stir-fried to perfection in a rich umami-packed sauce. The salt and pepper calamari is addictive, lightly battered, perfectly seasoned, and fried to a golden crisp that’s impossible to stop eating. The service is friendly and quick, making every visit a joy. Every dish bursts with authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and care. Tan Tan remains a must-visit for bold delicious Asian cuisine. So dang good!

I’d give this place a solid 3 because the food was good. What my Wife and Friend ordered was pretty delicious. Outside of that, they need to closely monitor the bathrooms because I saw something so horrifying, I am 100% sure I’ll get banned from posting reviews if I put a photo. Jesus.

One of the OG spots in Bellaire Chinatown—Tan Tan never misses! Their wonton noodle soup and rice cakes are still my absolute favorites. I just tried their new cheese puffs and it’s so tasty! Super flavorful and stuffed just right. I’m pretty picky when it comes to cheese puffs, but these definitely hit the mark. Service is still solid—everyone’s super attentive. The decor brings back all the nostalgic feels, and I love that even with a few updates, they’ve kept the original vibe alive. Will always come back.

James came out to say hi and make sure our experience was going well. My beautiful wife and I agreed it exceeded our expectations on every level. Our new favorite spot in Chinatown ~ Fish in a Clay pot ~ special fried rice 10 out of 10.

Food is stellar. I find their rice platters to be very delicious. Their noodles are cooked well, and the broth has a lot of flavor. There’s a lot of options for seafood, vegetarians, and general Chinese entres. All dishes besides appetizers, noodles, and platters come with a side of rice with unlimited refills.

Been going to Tan Tan for many years. Their prices are very reasonable and portions are good. Love their sweet and sour pork and their fried rice cake. Big shrimps used for their mayo and walnut shrimp dish.
