Amazing food, server was amazingly fast, and also cheap. The water they serve was amazing great and the burger I got was so good, I kept some of it. I recommend everyone around the area this restaurant

Pizza sauce needs more flavor to it although the crust and toppings/cheese were nice. Cheese curds were unbelievably salty. Atmosphere is very gloomy and dusty. It’s 2023, and yet this place continues to be cash only. If swipe fees are 3-5% then raise your prices 3-5% and take cards!

Not sure how this place got a 4.4 rating, maybe we stopped on an “off” day. Service was terrible at the bar, the cook never washed her hands or wore gloves and cooked everything from burgers, chicken, steak, fries, APPS, u name it. We got the pizza, which she didn’t bake, pizza was a top 5 pizza for sure, I wouldn’t get a burger no matter how great it smelled because id be afraid of getting sick. Doubt we will ever come back unless we get a pizza to go. 5 star pizza 1 star service.

Old school wisconsin hunting/fishing fans will love. Been coming here 25 hears. I live in Tn now and came back to Milwaukee for a night and drove to Portage for steak sandwiches on the way back South. Thats 5 extra hours and worth every bite. Great pizza but i needed a steak fix after being without for six years. Cash and check only though so bring it and remember to tip. Five stars as always. As a former Pub owner myself I promise it wont disappoint.

Pizza was very good, thin crust only. Server was nice and food was made fairly quickly. My only complaint would be that it’s small and cramped. Don’t be surprised if you bump someone else eating at the table behind you.

Consistently great burgers for over 4 decades. Pizza is also top shelf and this time my wife Tina had a meatball sub. Add that to the list of outstanding food. When I heard the place was going to change hands last fall I expected the worst. In December I drove down for a final Jumbo Cheezborger and I happened to meet the new owner. She schmoozed me and assured me that nothing would change other than some minor things the local health department wanted done, and damn, if she didn’t keep her promise. My wife and I went for lunch, we weren’t impressed at all. We both had the bacon cheese burger, it was terrible! The bacon was barely cooked, the patty was unseasoned and along with cheese, that’s all that was on it. We weren’t offered condiments or even salt and pepper. The cook seemed friendly enough but he never said a word to us. The waitress was very unfriendly and made my wife uncomfortable. The only thing good about the experience was the young man that took our payment, he was very outgoing and friendly and I’m glad my tip went to him

Shack a rack pizza. This small shack of a place has character and warmth to it. The service was friendly and fast from this local joint. The space is limited with a bar a few tables inside and a few outside. Parking is around it and down to the local park. Great location as it is just in town on the bike path.

Been living in portage 8 years, this place has always been hit or miss, but today they lost us as customers forever. Toppings on burger were incorrect, burger was slightly undercooked, broccoli cheddar bites were overcooked, my meatballs on my sub were overcooked, not fresh, one was even half burnt, I always ask for them to be easy on the sauce, they apparently didn’t care to even try today. When my wife called to tell them all this, they said you left with the food, there is nothing we can do, not even a sorry. So yeah, never again.

We like to consider ourselves pizza connoisseurs. Most of the time, however – it is typically disappointing. NOT at the Tamarack!! This place is definitely in my Top 5 for sure. Nestled in the quaint little town of Portage, WI. Worth the stop and one of the owners, Joyce, is a gem to chat with about the history within the train car we ate in.
