A little surprised by the strong reviews here. The food is standard, some things seem fresh and others (like the samosas) seem frozen. My lassi had chunks on the bottom!!! The beer was warm and flat. I’m worried about this place, the staff seem very nice but the food is unsettling. Fried onions was so greasy, butter chicken tasted so sweet and oddly spiced.

Excellent food, excellent service, excellent atmosphere. I’m so glad we visited! We were greeted directly when we entered and the waiter made us feel cozy and at home. The prices were very affordable and service was fast and efficient. The place has a BYOB possibility but also serves small brewery beers at a cheap price. I had Butter Chicken and it was creamy, delicious and just the perfect amount of ”spicy”. We were also served mango ice cream after our meal as a complementary dish by the restaurant. Highly recommend this place!

Lazy service, took forever to bring food when the restaurant was almost empty.
However, good live music.
Food was OK, not close to Indian food.

Excellent service and hospitality can be found at this location. The best way to describe TAJ is by telling you that it’s like a home cooked meal in a cozy environment without all of the bells, whistles, and sterility found in chain and contemporary restaurants.

No other Indian food spot compares. I’ve been coming back to this place since I moved to the city. The prices can’t be beat for food that is tasty & filling – I always leave with a full stomach! The family that runs the restaurant is always so welcoming and kind. It’s suitable for large gatherings or even dinner for two.
Their live sitar music is so wonderful to enjoy with your meal as well (be sure to bring cash to tip the musicians!)
They’ve been around for 35 years in the East Village. Show them some love! There’s so much richness in this restaurant.

Have come here twice with my family when they’ve visited in the last year. The live music is a great touch (call in advance to see what time the two sardarji’s are playing – that’s what makes it a 5). The owner’s a really nice lady whose family has owned it for many years.
It’s tasty, the service is excellent, it’s cheap, and filling. The food itself isn’t the best Indian I’ve tasted, but still quite good.
Highly recommend you try it.

I have gone to several Indian cuisine restaurants and never thought much of them for a variety of reasons. Taj was the exception. I got there a little earlier than the rest of my party of five. While I waited the proprietress and I began to have a pleasant conversation. Next thing that I knew, I was being treated like family. She brought me tea and insisted that I try some appetizers and we had a wonderful visit. Then, my friends showed up and we had a wonderful meal. They served wonderful food at a reasonable price and the service was friendly and thoughtful. Bravo to my new favorite Indian place in NYC in the East Village. If you are in the area, stop in.

Excellent food and service. The hostess helped us select delicious dishes that were great. We will definitely return. We had a Groupon for an Indian place down the street and stopped here by mistake and they honored it here. Wonderful woman– friendly and warm. A definite dining treasure. Highly recommended.

Taj is a great little spot. We were taken care of by one of the owners..lovely woman, I didn’t catch her name. She made us feel right at home/ really treated us like family. The food was delicious and the prices were even better. She made nice conversation with us, where my husband made mention it was my birthday…cut to later when we asked for the check, the owner and two other workers surprised us and came out with a complementary dessert topped off with a candle and they proceeded to sing Happy Birthday to me! So cute, so sweet. It almost felt like she was my mom..very ,maternal. Lol! I most definitely recommend this little hidden spot. Warm atmosphere, awesome food at very decent prices…did I mention that they even have live sitar playing on the weekends? Check it out!

We first walked in accidentally while looking for another restaurant and then set off to find it. Once we entered the one we had been looking for we had a terrible experience.
We then remembered this place that we stumbled in by accident (Taj Restaurant) and went back and let’s just say that I think it was a blessing in disguise! We came back to delicious food, fun, great staff, music, and just and overall wonderful experience. The food was great, love the lamb sag, it was melt in your mouth good! There was authentic music playing from their live band and everyone in the place was having a great night out including our party.
We shared a bunch of dishes and left happy and full! Would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND and will be coming back!
