Taj Mahal: A True Hidden Gem in Evansville
If you are looking for authentic Indian cuisine, look no further than Taj Mahal. Don’t let the modest, hole-in-the-wall appearance deceive you; what this restaurant lacks in exterior flash, it more than makes up for with incredible heart and flavor. It is easily one of the best Indian dining experiences I have ever had, and I find myself coming back time and time again.
What really sets this place apart is the warmth of the staff. They are incredibly friendly and actually take the time to remember you, which makes every visit feel personal and welcoming. It is rare to find a spot where the service feels as genuine as the food.
Speaking of the food, the menu is filled with high-quality options at very reasonable prices. However, the absolute crown jewel of their kitchen is the Lamb Masala. I typically order mine at a spice level eight, which provides a phenomenal kick that doesn’t overpower the rich, complex layers of the curry. It is, without a doubt, the best Lamb Masala in Evansville. You absolutely cannot skip the garlic naan either; it is the perfect vessel for soaking up every last bit of that delicious sauce. Whether you are a local or just passing through, this place is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates real-deal flavors and a friendly atmosphere.

I liked everything very good. Tandoori paneer, vegan biryani, Manchurian Gobi. Everything very yummy. The service was very quick and attentive. We got a free dessert which was very nice. Next time I am in town I will comeback. I also want to note that this restaurant is very affordable with great quality.

My friend and I went for Galentine’s dinner. The restaurant was so beautifully decorated! Our food and the service was outstanding. I cannot recommend more highly. We are already going back for the lunch buffet, which is always delicious and such a nice opportunity to try different dishes. Taj Mahal is my favorite for Indian cuisine! ( I should mention I have celiac and this a great place for me to safely eat with a lot of variety.)

Monday for lunch is our favorite time to come. That is not to say that any other time is bad, the food is always good here and the staff are always friendly and attentive. But where the rest of the week has a normal buffet, Monday has a special lunch meal. For $14.99 you get a cute metal lunch tray filled with rice, two half-portions of select entrees, a samosa, a tasty yogurt sauce, dessert and your choice of bread. You also get as much hot chai as you want. While it isn’t all you can eat, like the buffet, it’s enough food where I always have to take it home since I leave stuffed, but it looks like I’ve barely touched my food. We also like to order the chili potatoes. They are alway really great; and you can choose the spice level just like with the entrees. And if that doesn’t sound appealing, they have lunch specials for their normal meals as well.

Please excuse my rice in the photo- I couldn’t help myself and had a bite or two before taking the picture of the table. The chili potatoes-ordered separately- are in the black bowl in the center of the table.

I really liked the food and the staff was very nice. I got the Goat Vindaloo curry with some Naan bread and was pleasantly surprised. I have no clue what Vindaloo means but it tasted good. They also gave me some sort of honey coated donut ball as desert for my first time there (I don’t know the actual name, but it tasted good)

Very tasty authentic Indian food. My 6-year old daughter loved it. She finished her food so well. She also ordered gulabi jamun sundae, and it tasted amazing.
The atmosphere and service was really well. The staff was very caring and attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to all who love authentic Indian food.

Small businesses are what make Evansville a great place to live. Ethnic restaurants take that a step further by sharing their culture & food with us. Do yourself a favor & try this amazing restaurant.

My family and I have ordered carry out from Taj Mahal many times over the years. The vindaloo is tangy and flavorful. The tikka masala is smooth and comforting. Spicy is very spicy! When we want a spicy experience, we select 5. Normally we go with 2. The staff is wonderful & caring. This time around, we ordered vegetable samosas, naan, paneer kulcha, & chicken tikka. All were flavorful and comforting!

I ordered a chai when I picked up our carry out. It was wrapped with aluminum foil to prevent it from spilling (that was incredibly kind!). It was still piping hot after my 7 minute drive home. The flavor was incredible.

I was heartbroken to hear through TikTok that the tip jar was stolen a few days ago. Let’s help them out by visiting in person or ordering carry out directly. My pic are of the samosas & paneer kulcha.

Don’t know what to try? They have a lunch buffet!

My favorite place in Evansville for Indian cuisine!
The portions are great. The atmosphere is always calm and inviting. The service is always friendly. The prefect place for eating alone or with a group of friends/family. Normally I get the Butter Chicken, but tonight I tried the Chicken Kadai spicy level 3. No regrets! I will continue to be a repeat customer.
