In a sea of ‘wannabe’ omakase spots popping up across the Lower East Side, Taikun remains the real deal. They don’t cut corners or hide behind heavy seasonings and condiments, just perfectly proportioned nigiri with flavors that highlight the natural sweetness of the fish. If you’re tasting chili crisp on your nigiri, you’re in the wrong place. Taikun is a haven for sophisticated palettes who know the difference between actual quality and social media hype. Pro tip: The sake pairing is a non-negotiable (a must try). The chef and host are always friendly, accommodating, and masters of their craft.

One of the best omakases I’ve tried. The flavors go perfectly together, simple and uncomplicated. The fish was fresh and portions are great. Our host and chef were friendly and thoroughly explained everything, their service is on point. I recommend the sake pairing. The sakes go so well with the fish. The flavor of everything is fantastic. I love that they escort you into the speakeasy bar for your last course and you can hang out there for as long as you like and get more drinks.. because what do people like to do after dinner? Find a bar to hang out in of course. Genius. The party next to us was already there for their second? time. I’ll definitely be doing the same!
The Omakase menu follows a fairly standard progression with all of the familiar fish and good quality rice. The fish are all imported from Japan and I would say overall the quality was excellent. There was some interesting takes on the traditional preparation, such as adding olive oil, salt or marinating the Ikura in a sake and soy sauce marinade. While some of these techniques are nontraditional, I have to say that they worked really well and we both loved them.
I opted for the $55 sake pairing, which came with three excellent glasses of sake, and one glass of an excellent California Zinfandel. The sakes were all great and I am a fan of the Zin but I have to say I probably would have preferred another glass of sake because I didn’t think the wine was a very good choice for the fish. They chose to pair these Zinfandel with the oily fish, which makes sense intellectually. I just wasn’t feeling it. However, this was really the only constructive criticism I could offer of the entire meal and I think the beverage pairing was a good value at the $55 price point.
Great dinner, good value, excellent drinks… What more do you want? We will be back!
No vavavoom over the top creation just pure focus on high quality fish and intimate service to details. Felt like you are dining in a speakeasy with just 6 /8 seats at the bar with curtain closed once everyone is seated.
Normally we dont order extra pieces but this time we both got a second of our fav, uni and scallop.
Highly recommended !!
If you’re in New York City, definitely add Taikun to the top of your to do list.
I’m already planning to go back and I live in Montreal, Quebec…!
I didn’t take pics of every piece…was busy enjoying…
Taikun has top notch fish, service, and value.
