Reviews
To start, the atmosphere of the restaurant was very friendly, loud, exciting and welcoming. Bricked walls, art, Entertainment, the smell of the food cooking in the kitchen, a bar, and even outdoor seating. This place is a spot to come after a long day of work with friends or family to come and hangout. Ample seating for as much as 6 people.
My family and I decided to give the tacos a go, they absolutely blew me away. The amount of flavor, the salt, the beef, chicken, pork, I gotta say, it was just absolutely delicious. The first bite of the taco was heavenly!! They probably got some secret sauce in the back. We gave some of their special tacos a try, stuff that you typically wouldn’t see at a taco restaurant, just absolutely amazing once again. The prices on the tacos were fairly reasonable, a bit expensive for 3 but definetly worth trying.
Service was fantastic ! We had very nice people serving us the food with smiles on their faces. I have no complaints whatsoever for them. They got an amazing group of people, chefs, bartenders, waiters and waitresses.
This restaurant is a place to absolutely come to and enjoy some good food. This was hands down, one of the best Mexican restaurants that I have been too in a very long time, to be fair, it is in Arizona but I was never disappointed. I would highly recommend coming to a place like this BUT..you must be with some friends, gotta have some company here. Amazing job, looking forward to our next visit back!
If you are looking for a spot that perfectly bridges the gap between a fast-food taqueria and a trendy sit-down restaurant, Taco Chelo on Roosevelt is the place. The energy hits you the second you walk in: lively music, a full bar, and an atmosphere that says you’re here for a good time. Whether you choose the indoor counter seating or the outdoor patio, the vibe is consistently welcoming and clean.
The Service Model
It’s a unique hybrid style. You’ll find a water station centered in the restaurant where you grab your own H2O, keeping things casual and low-pressure. However, the service doesn’t stop there—friendly servers bring your food to the table and check in frequently to ensure “the vibe is right.” It’s unpretentious but provides exactly the level of service you actually want.
The Menu & Flavor
The food is authentic and brings serious flavor, though you should be prepared for a hint of spice across most dishes.
The Hits: The taco selection is top-tier. Their proteins range from Carne Asada and Barbacoa to their famous Costra Taco (caramelized cheese on a flour tortilla).
The Miss: If there was one letdown, it was the Guacamole and Chips. The chips were served cold, and the guacamole felt a bit average compared to the explosive seasoning found in their tacos and meats.
Weekly Specials & Sports
They really lean into the neighborhood hangout feel with their deals:
Taco Tuesday: A local favorite where you can snag $2 tacos (choice of chicken, veggie, or carnitas) all day long.
Happy Hour: Usually running Daily from 3 PM – 6 PM (and often all day Tuesday), featuring $6 house or frozen margaritas, $7 micheladas, and discounts on canned or bottled cervezas.
Game Day: Unlike some “artsy” spots on Roosevelt, they have flat-screen TVs for sports viewing, making it a great place to catch a game without the rowdiness of a standard sports bar.
Final Verdict
Taco Chelo is a fantastic “every occasion” spot. It’s romantic enough for a date night but casual enough for a girls’ or guys’ night out to grab a drink and a few authentic tacos. As long as you can handle a little mild heat, you’re in for a great night.
Food was good, parking is a hit or miss for close spots.
Chicken tacos were very good and the barbacoa quesidilla was delicious. Got their Picosa drink which was delicious as well.
But the real MVP? Their handmade tortillas. You can taste the difference. Fresh, soft, and they tie everything together perfectly.
There’s no shortage of taco spots in Phoenix, but Taco Chelo stands out not just for the food, but for the vibe. You can tell it’s got that local, family-run heart behind it. And as someone who supports mom-and-pop businesses any chance I get, this place hit home. I’ll definitely be back and bringing people with me.
