The wine and beverage program is thoughtfully curated and pairs well with the food, enhancing the overall experience. Service is polished, knowledgeable, and well paced, creating a relaxed but professional atmosphere from start to finish. The dining room feels warm and inviting, making it equally suitable for a special occasion or a well planned night out.
Consistently high quality across food, service, and ambiance. Strongly recommended and easily one of the best restaurants in the area.
What felt perhaps most frustrating is after the aforementioned requests to the menu, what was brought to the table felt flat and underwhelming. Granted it’s Christmas eve and any eves are precarious times on which to temper expectations, the food felt under-considered, somewhat slapped together and mostly all within a narrow band of flavor profile; umami and salty with some sauces appearing twice, similar textures etc.
My wines were paired to an ox tail I wasn’t having as well as a second dish that had been changed which indicates to me a lack of care and/or communication that seems beneath a spot like this. The pours were utterly scant and came far before the dishes they were meant to accompany. Which brings the timing up as yet another issue and one that will bring us to the end of our night there.
We’ve now completed our meal and by the time I’ve signed the cc receipt for it, there’s a pain of regret in paying that much for what we just experienced. And as we sort of lingered over digestifs, we were approached by a third staff (who at some point described my wine pairing to me in presence of the wine director which is to comment on the somewhat messiness to what, in such a small room, should be a well choreographed dance. Swans on a lake. Graceful and we don’t want to see the frantic kicking. Much less hear it all night 2 feet from our table.) to ask us to leave as another party has been waiting.
I get it, its a small room. However something in the ask itself, the manner of it and certainly on the heel of an incredibly underwhelming meal just rubbed all of us in a way that made it hard to even feign happy holidays wishes while filing out.
I know the chef there has immense talent and standards and expectations but if I were him, I would be beside myself livid that the front of house failed like this.
I’d like to say we’ll try again, and of course TCP deserves such fairness, certainly it shouldn’t be preserved in such a sour amber based on one visit, and there were very good bites in there to be sure but it’s hard to imagine why or when we’d do so at this point.
We have dined with TCP several times since they opened up at this location and all experiences have been great, however, this one was spot on in every way.
And it was extra special because we brought my brother-in-law and wife for his birthday, neither of whom had visited before but had heard us raving over the years about how amazing TCP is. Because of this, there were some pretty high expectations from their side of the table and TCP’s chefs, servers, and staff fully delivered, with my sister-in-law even proclaiming that this very well may have been the best meal of her life. (It certainly ranked Top 5 all-time for us.)
The food was amazing, the service was top notch (efficient and professional, as well as perfectly friendly) and the ambiance was warm and welcoming.
I highly recommend getting the full menu…and DO add the Parker House Roll! Every time I hear someone at another table ask a server what it is, I want to lean over and tell them to just order it and if they like it, I’ll buy it off them.
And as far as the tasting menu, it’s fantastic. We have had the pleasure of dining at a lot of Michelin starred restaurants and cannot quite figure out why TCP has not yet received this distinction. Their food and service easily rank at least halfway up our list of actual Michelin star.experiences, and easily beats out the 2 star restaurant up the coast that we have visited several times. However, at the same time they have not overdone it with ridiculous food and perplexing dishes and cutlery. They are very creative while still remaining approachable and fun.
We usually find at least one item on a tasting menu to be a bit off but every single one on this menu is well thought out, well prepared, and absolutely a delight for the eyes, the nose, and the tongue and belly. I wish I could pick a favorite but all were amazing. But I will say that the prosciutto bite was unique (I could easily eat half a dozen of those balls), the scallop may be the best crudo we have ever had, the duck was perfect (what we expect from Liberty Ducks in the hands of Chef Steph and Chef Steven), and the pre-dessert and actual dessert were simply amazing.
Finally, the service was first class. As my regular readers know, I revel in great service and love to give that credit where it is due and Danny and Jessie (both Petaluma Foodies, I believe) not only complimented but complemented the experience perfectly. They are professional without being stuffy and are knowledgeable without being condescending. They give 3 star Michelin service while keeping things fun, light, and enjoyable. And they did not try to run us off as soon as we were finished with our meal. They allowed us to relax and bask in the glory of what we had just experienced, and honestly, that extra 10 minutes or so that we lingered was necessary so as to fully appreciate what we had just experienced.
As an added bonus, their lighting above the tables is perfect for food photos. They are LED orbs that put off enough light to keep the room well lit, but unless you are directly under them, you do not even see that they are on. But slide your dish to the middle of the table and you have excellent overhead lighting so that you don’t have to use your phone’s flash or ask a companion to light things up with their cell phone’s flashlight app.
And for those who saw my question here last week about the corkage fee, we love their wine selection (they even have an amazing non-alcoholic sparkling wine), but the bottle of port we brought from home was so worth it to have with our meal that the corkage fee felt like a bargain!
Although TCP may be one of the pricier places in Petaluma, when compared with other Michelin-esque places, they are actually quite a value. And if you want to taste the same flavors but from a more cost conscious menu, check out their Social Hour.
We cannot wait to visit TCP again, soon!
As a vegan, finding a tasting menu that is something I can eat is always a treat and this was exactly that. In my reservation I outlined my allergies and then called to follow up to ensure the meal was able to be adjusted. My three friends enjoyed the traditional menu.
Highly recommend this experience
