It’s been many years since I’ve been to this location of Sweetwater, so when in the area with a co-worker we came in for lunch. Getting there soon after they opened for the day, they were empty, but within 30 mins, they were packed.
Service was decent, not very personable, but very good and on-point. I’ve been to nearly all the GAR restaurants over the years… I’ve been eating at Mike’s since ’91, so I’ve had many meals at their places, but have never tried their crab cakes. I decided this trip to try their crab cake sandwich. I have to say it was a very sad looking sandwich! No lettuce nor tomato on it. There was the smallest dot of remoulade on it and the crab cake itself had a strong lemon flavor, not much of a crab flavor and constantly fell out of the bun when I took each bite. There was a slightly higher amount of breading/filler than a true MD crab cake should have and it was just lackluster. GAR does so many things so very well and being the first customers of the day, I wanted to order their fillet tips, as they frequently run out, but I changed it up to get this and totally regretted my decision.
My coworker’s tuna salad looked absolutely amazing though and he raved about it!
Overall, I’d most definitely return, they might have hiccups at times, but are still the best restaurant chain in the area. But I am disappointed with this visit.

The place was beautiful when we walked in and we got sat near the lake so we had a beautiful view of the water. The server was honestly great at his job and the dessert was honestly my favorite!! I got the crab cakes but didn’t like them to be honest. I will DEFINETLY have to return to try something new.

Food freshness, deliciousness and quality remains the same. The bread was addicting yummy. I had the SW salad. I wished they put more figs and pine nuts like before. The Mango Martini was so good! The roast chicken was nice except for the presentation. It needs a female touch. The vanilla bean creme brulee was outstanding. It was one of the best one we have tried. And we have tried so many. The best thing is to make reservations since it can get crowded especially on a weekend. We will definitely come back and try new dishes.

I had a really good experience at Sweetwater Tavern. The ribs were excellent — tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The wood-grilled chicken had a nice smoky flavor, although it was a little on the salty side.
Shane was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped us switch our regular fries to sweet potato fries, which we really appreciated. When we mentioned the chicken was a bit salty, he quickly got Manager Paul to come over and help. Paul handled the situation professionally and made sure everything was taken care of.
We also came in with our service dog, and Shane was very respectful and made sure not to interact or distract the dog, which meant a lot to us. Overall, great food and excellent customer service — we’ll definitely be back.

I ordered the hickory grilled hanger steak. While cooked to perfection, all I could taste was the garlic butter they cooked it in. It was gritty and full of fat. The mashed potatoes fell flat as well. Service was spectacular, but I would not eat there again.

Local spot for when I visit headquarters. Cannot recommend this place enough. While the goat cheese salad with their skirt steak is a staple the fish of the day is also absolutely worth it. Today was red snapper with butternut squash and a corn chowder base. Lastly, the chicken breast entree is also pictured.

The food was decent, and our waiter was kind and attentive. My main issue was with the décor. There is a painting on the wall depicting about 50 exclusively white patrons at a bar. Where is the representation of your diverse customer base? The painting does not reflect “Great American”, nor does it represent the diverse local demographics of Virginia, Maryland, or Washington, D.C. that you serve. In fact, it is actually off-putting. The design team and corporate leadership missed the mark here.
