I appreciated the top-notch customer service and the owner, Ms. Cheryl is so precious. She was also in the kitchen cooking with her staff. I most definitely will be returning.
A few days later, I decided to return so the whole family could try it out. I spent around $75, but the portions were still small, and the presentation was worse. They only provided about 7-10 fries with each order. The food remained good, though.
On my third visit after work, I went to pick up some dinner. The restaurant closes at 7 PM, and I arrived at 4 PM, but a worker (or possibly the owner) informed me that they had to stop taking orders. This was disappointing because out of the three times I had been there, I really only had one good experience.
Overall, the food is good, but the wait time is a little long since it is made to order. The workers are nice, but I find the prices slightly high, especially for the cupcakes. One cupcake costs $6.75, which seems extremely high, whether it’s vegan or not. I’ll give them another chance because they are nice people, and it’s a convenient vegan restaurant compared to the usual options.
Sweet Vegan Bakes wasn’t so sweet to this birthday girl.
I wanted me and my brother’s joint birthday celebration to be a night of love, support, and class — and my guests delivered exactly that. Unfortunately, the owner of Sweet Vegan Bakes, Chef Cheryl, did not represent herself or her business in the best light, from the booking process to the end of the event.
At 5pm, my godbrother dropped off food and was met with unprofessional behavior — she snapped at him and told him we could not set up. This could have been communicated politely. At that point, I already knew the refundable deposit would be an issue, given her behavior all week.
The venue itself wasn’t clean and arranged when apprived, and several things went wrong once the event began:
The specialty cocktail was made with tequila, not Hennessy.
There was no Hennessy at the bar at all, although it was the foundation of the specialty drink we requested.
There was no table for the food, and we were told we could not use the restaurant tables because they “couldn’t withstand heat.” I had to go to Home Depot to purchase a table.
Guests had to leave the event to purchase the correct liquor for the bar.
Despite all of this, our celebration remained beautiful, classy, peaceful, and full of love — something my family and friends created, not the venue.
End of Night & Deposit Issue
My sister respectfully asked about extending the event, and we were told it was fine. We had already cleaned up, assisted with bussing tables, and made sure everything was left orderly. The contract listed 10:30pm as the end time.
At 10:45pm, Ms. Cheryl informed my sister that we owed an additional $700 for going past time and that the refundable deposit would not be returned.
At that moment, instead of ruining my evening, I chose peace. I thanked everyone for coming and ended the night gracefully — in spite of Ms. Cheryl’s behavior.
I intentionally chose this venue because I wanted to support a Black-owned business. The room was filled with Black excellence, potential partnerships, and opportunities for future business — yet her behavior was unprofessional, inconsistent, and often aggressive.
I cannot recommend Sweet Vegan Bakes, nor will I be a return customer. My hope is that, of all the things Ms. Cheryl tried to take away from that night, she takes this review as a learning opportunity. It is heartbreaking that she behaved this way, especially on such a special night.
The experience was decent overall, but there were a few downsides. I had to ask for a receipt, and the cashless payment policy (card-only) was slightly inconvenient. While the ambiance impressed us, I’m eager to see if the value of the food aligns better with the pricing in future visits.
The green beans were a little watery and the onions in the greens beans weren’t crispy like the last time I had.
The Mac and cheese is very creamy and cheesy. This is the first time I had their Mac and cheese. I was good but can use a little more seasoning to taste.
Overall, I keep coming back so they are doing something wonderful.
Catch me with another review soon on some other food choices I might have. 😉
I had the OMG burger and oh my goodness, it was delicious!
I also had the strawberry matcha! Awesome! I didn’t like matcha until today! She sold me!
Please come and treat yourself to some amazing vegan food! It is worth the trip!
