After Seeing your reply, I have a couple things to say.
First off, there is no reason you could ever not change the tip amount or percentage on a POS system. I worked in finance for years for a company who actually maintained and sold POS systems and there is no reason you could ever not change your POS. Simply reach out to your POS system provider and request that.
You mentioned the “Other” option… Yes it’s there…but it’s the fact that you have to go out of your way to tip less then the recommended amount. Thanks for agreeing that tipflation is outrageous – how about doing something about it instead of playing along?
Tipflation is about outrageous suggestions and the fact that you can’t just select a reasonable amount without going out of your way to do so. It’s the implication that you’re giving below what is “Normal” that makes the customer feel like they’re in the wrong. If the tip was not expected, then why do I have to go out of my way to type less then the amounts YOU recommended. I have a photo here of your POS system and for an order of $10.54 it asked for me to tip $3.00, $5.00 or $7.00! a 70% tip? Really?
I understand your claiming it can’t be fixed but as someone who has worked in the industry I am telling you either you have to learn more about your POS or you’re just lying. If on the off chance you really can’t change your POS amounts (which I know you can), then change your system because this is nuts. Many other businesses have this issue but not to the scale that yours does.
If your POS changes I’d be glad to give you guys a 5 Star review. And I do genuinely appreciate your response. But seriously…look at the photo below… do you really think this is normal??? I assume you’re paying your employees a wage, right? This isn’t a waiter/waitress situation…right?
Original Post:
I bought a $9 ice cream Quart. At the checkout the pin-pad gives you four options…the SMALLEST tip option was $3. I was blown away. 33% tip for service that took 2 minutes of which I was standing the entire time? Not to mention that was the lowest tip option. The options just went up from there. I saw a $4.50 option…seriously? 50% tip? I didn’t even remember the highest tip option since I was in such disbelieve that the lowest was 33%
By the time I was ready to check out I was so baffled at the audacity especially when the server is right there staring at you make the selection.
Now here is the kicker. There was absolutely no “No Tip” option. There was only a “Custom tip” option. Do you seriously want me to be watched by your employees while I specifically go out of my way to type in a lower tip then what they suggest? It felt uncomfortable, pushy and unprofessional. I seriously was just blown away by the fact you guys use this system.
I will be honest…i clicked the $3 tip because i felt so awkward being stared down. I don’t like that feeling and the TipFlation everywhere is getting out of hand.
I loved the ice cream but please fix this. I really would love an option to just round up to the nearest dollar or even lower tip options.
I really would love to review this place higher, I just cant with such a trashy system for tips. Get this changed and id gladly give it 5 stars!
When you go to pay; the options there are wildly overpriced for tips. The usual tips expectancy in this country is 15% and that’s not even an option at this place.
By not having a reasonable tip and making customers physically type in a lower amount if they don’t have that much money RIGHT IN FRONT of the worker who just made my food, it was a very unwelcoming and uncomfortable experience.
Does this company not adequately pay their employees? Why else would they have to rely on such heavy tips? All in all it was rather embarrassing for me and insulting to the employee who has NO SAY in what management determines to be an appropriate tip.
I was very disappointed and will not be returning, as well as telling all my friends to find another place to go that doesn’t price gouge us for wanting a sweet treat every now and then.
