Recently, I visited the café with a friend who had never been there before. I was really excited to show her the place because it has always been special to me. I’ve gone many times and always felt welcomed and comfortable. Sadly, this visit was very different.
I checked the hours and saw they close at 7 PM, so we made sure to go early. We arrived around 5:50 PM, almost 6 PM, because we only planned to have a quick coffee and not stay too late. I also work in customer service, so I completely understand how frustrating it can be when people show up right before closing, which is why we made sure to come with plenty of time.
My friend wanted to order a waffle, which I had highly recommended because I’ve ordered it several times and really like it. The cashier told us they couldn’t make waffles because the machines had already been cleaned. That honestly surprised me. From my experience working in service, items are usually prepared until much closer to closing time. Being told this almost an hour before closing was disappointing, especially since it was something I was excited for my friend to try.
We ended up ordering two drinks and a slice of cake, but everything was served as if it was to-go, even though there were still open tables and time before closing. We stayed until 7 PM, and there were still multiple tables occupied.
The girl who helped us wasn’t rude, but her attitude made us feel rushed. About 10 minutes before closing, she reminded us they close at 7 PM, which we respected. However, when we left right at closing time, other tables were still there and didn’t seem to be rushed out. That made the situation feel uncomfortable and a little unfair.
This place has meant a lot to me over time, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I really hope this was just an off day because I’ve always loved coming here. Unfortunately, after this visit, I’m not sure if I will be coming back.
While visiting my dad in Roanoke for the last two weeks, I’ve spent every morning at this cafe. It is fantastic. The baristas seem chill and friendly. Try a hot latte with orange silk.
