Family and I decided to stop by for a quick meal after Black Friday shopping. Enticed by their “energizing rice bowls”, we ordered some food at Sutadonya and were met with a disappointing $20 meal. The wait time was not bad and the ordering process through their kiosk was pretty efficient and effortless. However, when we got our food, the bowls were half-full and incredibly bland. I ordered the spicy Chicken Katsu bowl and there was no spice nor flavor to be found anywhere in the bowl. There are several other spots nearby that offer the same items at a far cheaper price with greater portions and flavor.

If you don’t mind waiting upwards of 15-20 minutes for your food, it’s definitely a place worth visiting! The food is so flavorful and fresh, and the prices seem fair. Only con is the wait time, and lack of seating, but that’s not really the fault of the restaurant since it’s in a food court.

Will definitely go again!

We had the garlic pork, garlic pork and curry, gyoza, and fried rice.

I have been going to sutadonya ever since 2017 and have never had any issues. But unfortunately, the last few times I had it, it left me with almost immediate stomach discomfort. I ordered the spicy garlic pork bowl. My guess is that the meat is not being properly cooked or expired meat is being used. I highly recommend double checking expiration dates on the items in the kitchen. I sadly won’t be coming back until the food safety standards are under control.

This restaurant located inside Mitsuwa in their food court specializes in donburi (rice bowls). The food is delicious, but dining in at the food court is always a stressful experience at peak hours and their new self-serve order kiosk is slow.

FOOD
The onion, garlic beef bowl is phenomenal in flavor. The karaage is juicy and tender, but it does not have a thick, crunchy breading though if that is a consideration.

ATMOSPHERE
Food court has limited seating so weekend peak times can be chaotic. I’d advise choosing a less popular time/day or possibly order for take out.

SERVICE
They are decently fast in preparing the food after ordering. The self-serve kiosk for ordering has a delay after ordering and printing out your receipt Texting the receipt option might be the way to go.

This restaurant is inside the Mitsuwa market! If you need a quick meal, you can get a very tasty meal here! I ordered the Garlic pork bowl over rice with a soft boil egg! The service was kinda slow! Overall, the rice had lots of flavor!

I haven’t consumed rice in days, and I’m beginning to feel weak and fatigued. I need rice in my system or my body will go nuts because I’m Asian, this is a curse.

I’ve discovered a location that can satisfy my craving. Some of the items they provide include rice, which is a plus. I immediately placed my order via kiosk since this is a counter service restaurant.

I swiftly found a seat after submitting my order; now I’m just waiting patiently. It may seem like an eternity, yet my sacrifice will be rewarded.

I was irritated to find out my meal was done without knowing when it would be ready because the staff didn’t bother to contact me or yell my order number thankfully I was paying attention else I’d be starving to death.

My mood altered once I had the food and returned to the table. The food was served in a to-go plastic container with a lid, which I thought was a good idea in case folks couldn’t finish their meal.

It’s a basic rice dish with nothing special to say. It simply served fried chicken over rice. The chicken was still hot, and the outside was quite crispy with a satisfying crunch. I personally think they overdid the sauce because the rice had been drenched in it. The sauce is tasty, but there is far too much vinegar flavor.

I’m pleased with my decision, and the rice dish served its function; now I can resume my life as usual. Thank you for the meal

1 of the 2 go-to restaurants in Mitsuwa I regularly eat from when shopping in my time machine.

I call Mitsuwa my time machine since whenever I’m in here, it brings me back in time when I was growing up a navy brat when my father was stationed there from June ’80-Nov ’87 in Japan.

I mostly go with the curry & rice, my wife always has the seafood fried rice and we always share the gyoza.

Delicious food at decent prices if not a bit pricy because of the rise in food supply prices and employee minimum wage.

Food is always hot & fresh, service always friendly but seating is limited and we’re always waiting to jump all over a table when ppl are leaving.

Sutadonya is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants; when we lived in Ikebukuro, we got takeout from there a couple times a month. The prices are higher than what I’m used to but are fair for the US market. The karaage bowl is deceptively filling, because even though there’s only three, each piece is huge. It’s probably equivalent to the 8-9 piece bowl I always get in Japan, and it’s still got the perfect texture — crispy outside, juicy inside.

The only thing I’m missing is the sauce. I don’t know if Americans are just weak or they don’t want the recipe crossing an ocean, but I desperately want their house soy garlic sauce because whatever they’re using here doesn’t give me the kick in the tongue that I’m craving. (I would also buy bottles of that stuff, nudge nudge, wink wink.)

The food wasn’t that great. The yakisoba wasn’t anything like the photos on display, used a different kind of noodles and lacked taste. Katsudon was ok.

During my time in Japan I frequented gyudon fast food restaurants, particularly Yoshinoya and Sukiya. So, a month removed from being overseas, I decided to splurge a bit and come here for the after some shopping at Mitsuwa. Here, they call it a “beef sutadon”, but let’s not be cute, it’s just gyudon with more garlic.

Perhaps as a consequence of much higher price versus the dish being served in Japan (~1500 yen vs. $26, accounting for extra portion, cabbage, egg, miso and Pepsi) or more intense seasoning, the quality of American beef won here and the main dish was quite flavorful. Rice was pretty quality too, even better (dare I say) than fast-food gyudon in Japan.

The egg (soft and smushed into in a sauce cup) was pretty good addition to the gyudon. It also added a bit of fat to mask the strong salt content that gyudon is known for. However the miso soup was way too strong and the cabbage was pretty glucosinolate-filled (tasting noticeably bitter), so much so that I couldn’t eat it.

Would I recommend? Absolutely. I’ll also be on the lookout for the few other places that have it. But it definitely hit the spot!
