Our first time in here and everything about it was amazing. I’m still newish to eating actual sushi and really picky. Staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic, fresh and reasonably priced. I could see my self eating so much that I’d physically be in pain because it was so good. We will definitely be coming back.

Low-key dinner spot with a small sushi bar and only a few tables. I can’t see it ever getting too loud or busy in there. This isn’t the type of place I’d go if I wanted to stuff myself with sushi. They have a big menu of other Japanese dishes and the portions are reasonable for 1 person. The atmosphere was calm and quiet the night I went with bright lighting and quiet music.

One of the worst sushi restaurants Ive ever been to. The “sashimi platter” 35$ wasnt filling whatsoever. Everyone knows Japanese restaurants use frozen fish and their profit margins are higher than other restaurants because they can use the Japanese theme to demand more money. The sashimi was bland, didn’t taste that amazing, I doubt the fish was thawed daily. And the portion sizes dont justify the price. I’ll reemphasis this…tiny portions.
My friend ordered the rainbow roll 18$ …. TINY ROLL. I think theres a lack of competition in Tacoma because in Seattle there are places similarly priced where you get much more food, or just cheaper but still great flavor.
The place looks cool and the service wasnt bad. But their prices are just rediculous. Their ala carte menu is insane. 8.89$ for 2 pieces of yellow tail??? You can get 6 pieces in Miami of yellowtail (high cost of living) for 10$. Not 10$ for two pieces. There isn’t any part of that place that justifies the prices. Either make the food higher grade or lower your prices.
My friend got nauseated after going and I was stuck in the bathroom for an hour also.
Never coming back.
Also, picture attached. It’s zoomed in, the sashimi platter I got. The cuts of the sushi are very unprofessional. Theyre like blobs of sushi and they overcompensate with the tuna.
People go to a Japanese restaurant for strong (fresh) flavor, hospitality, high quality ingredients and a premium presentation. Look elsewhere if you want that type of experience.

Sushi Tama has been our go-to sushi restaurant in Tacoma for over 20 years! While it has a small dining room, the food is delicious and always made with care and attention to detail. It is always spotlessly clean and the service is excellent.
You should try to make a reservation in advance or come during a less busy day of the week. Even at 4:30 it might already be packed. However it is well worth the wait.
It might not be as upscale as some other restaurants but it has a comfortable feel to it that puts you at ease. Food might take a little longer than at other places at times but again, it’s worth the wait.
It’s a wonderful place for a date night or evening with good friends. It might not be the best option for really active little ones in the family, but if you do take them just make sure to bring things to keep them entertained and happy.

Our favorite Japanese restaurant since they opened (20 years ago?). Always fresh sushi and a varied Japanese menu. Friendly and attentive service, too. Great for take-out as well.

My first time here. Picked up 2 orders of teriyaki chicken, 1 Cali roll, 1 temp shrimp appetizer, $70 after tip. The chicken is dry and flavorless, only 4 shrimp and really small for the price. The Cali roll was good but only two pieces of ginger. I asked for extra teriyaki sauce on the chicken and got no sauce from what I could tell. I drove all the way back and they gave me two small cups that I should have gotten with a regular order. I had to ask for more and got a third cup. The kids working there are kind. Small servings for the price. Not sure how they have great ratings.

Been going there for about 14 years. Had a birthday dinner tonight for my wife and kids. Sushi portions were small for the price. My wife had Katsudon, and it was overcooked and dry. While I was in the restroom, the Sushi Chef came to our table and told my son that it’s very rude to stick your chopsticks in the rice while not eating, then GRABBED his eating utensil and put it on his bowl! WTH! I’m glad I wasn’t there. My son immediately was embarrassed, and upset and walked out. He didn’t want to make a scene since we were celebrating my wife’s birthday. I came out from the restroom, heard what happened, paid $226. and we all left. Not going back there again, but our server was Excellent!
