I finally visited Sushi Kanpai after it had been on my list for a while, and I’m glad I did. I happened to be nearby (it’s right next door to O’Brien’s, the NY Giants bar, even though the team hasn’t been relevant for about 15 years), and I was able to get a reservation at the sushi bar. Surprisingly, the bar was almost empty at 7 pm on a Saturday, which actually made the experience feel relaxed and personal.

The menu had many items I already love and a few I hadn’t tried before. Prices are definitely higher than what I’m used to, but it’s Santa Monica and the quality is strong, so it felt fair. I considered doing omakase, not sure if they officially offer it, but ended up ordering a series of nigiri pieces.

Food highlights:

– Shoraku ponzu appetizer — delicious, bright, and something I hadn’t had before.
– Nigiri: King salmon, Kinmedai, Tai, Kurodai, Shima Aji, Ikura, Chu-toro, Ocean Trout, Tamago
– Negitoro cut roll

House cold sake carafe (server offered a tasting of two premium sakes, but they were a bit too pricey for me)

Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and honestly better than I expected. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing.

Parking in the back of the restaurant was also a huge plus.

Overall, I really enjoyed the dinner. Quality sushi, great service, slightly on the expensive side, but worth it for what you get. I’d definitely come back.

Ate here with friends after our Pokemon Go event. The staff are so nice and friendly! In addition to the great tasting food (orders ranging from sushi to ramen), they were really kind and generous to our table! We came with a Fennekin plush and they set him up really nice with us!

This is the best sushi in all of Santa Monica. Chef Yoshi makes the biggest hand rolls. The menu is very extensive. We eat here once a week and love the food.

Hidden gem. Noticeably high quality ingredients and great service. Even my Korean mom, who is germaphobic and difficult to impress, enjoyed her meal very much. Will be coming here again.

We ordered the oyster/uni (!), the baked scallop roll (!), the chirashi bowl, the sea cucumber, and the spicy japan scallop roll. Everything tasted fantastic and we didn’t leave a single grain of rice.

In my opinion, it’s rare to encounter Japanese food in America that I end up loving. Every raw ingredient looked and tasted fresh. Uni here was creamy, the green tea was well-steeped, and the sesame seeds on the spicy japan roll were aromatic.

I highly recommend that you come here for a special occasion or whenever you crave extremely FRESH Japanese food.

I have been coming to Kanpai for over 15 years. They finally opened up a location in Santa Monica. The most important Takeaway about this restaurant is the wide variety of exotic Japanese sushi sashimi. They have incredible seasonal type shellfish, and a variety of fish that you will not ordinarily get at any other sushi restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant to the real Japanese sushi enthusiast.

We had a very nice dinner here on a Tuesday night. Wasabi was our server, and was good attentive and made us laugh. We were introduced to the owner, Miho, who graciously gave us a sample of special chilled Japanese sake. We ordered a few things from the sushi bar, like the Hokkaido scallops which were beautifully presented and melted in your mouth. The amberjack was also devine! My husband enjoyed the Volcano Ramen which is spicy good. I love their battera sushi, salmon skin salad and vegetable tempura! Thank you Wasabi and Miho for a wonderful evening!

Happy Hour review
7 days a week 12noon-6pm ( kitchen closes at 3pm- 4:30pm)

Fantastic food choices for HH! I love their Salmon Skin Salad and vegetable tempura, as well as the agedashi tofu. If you like lemony fish, their salmon collar with lemon is heavenly!
Their choices for alcohol for HH is either beer or sake. I love Kanpai Sushi for authentic Japanese food.

October 2024.

Last night I came for dinner. My friend and I had a quick dinner. She ordered the salmon sushi plate. The presentation was beautiful. Each salmon was described well by the staff. She also ordered an a la carte chicken teriyaki, which she said was very tasty. I ordered the Volcano Ramen at level 2. It was spicy good! I don’t think I could handle a level 3, but those who really like spicy hot dishes, go for it. The Volcano consists of ground pork, egg and more. The Volcano Ramen comes in one size, the large bowl, which I wasn’t able to finish because I got full. There is a disclaimer on the menu that one cannot take home any leftover ramen. Overall, our dinner was simple and delicious. The staff here are all Japanese and many of the menu items share the origin in Japan where it comes from. This makes Kanpai very authentically Japanese.

I am back after 2 weeks and I brought a new friend!
We both ordered from the Lunch Set menu. There are lots of options during lunch and reasonably priced. Generous portions. The ramen broth is so delicious! The mini donburi bowls are filling! I have had the Unagi/ eel and the Salmon Ikura and both are really really good! The small salad has a wonderful unami dressing and the panacotta dessert is a wonderful palette cleanser.

We both ordered the RAMEN SET and shared a hot sake ( small ) from the Happy Hour menu. We both loved our meal and the shared sake and we will definitely return!

There is a small parking lot in the back. Make sure you read the painted marked spots for Kanpai.

My friend stumbled across this authentic Japanese restaurant on Wilshire ( 22nd- 23rd block) and was very impressed! My friend lives part time in Tokyo and part time here in LA. She was reluctant to try this Japanese restaurant because she has high standards of the quality of what Japanese food should taste like!

The menu is vast, but we ordered from the Lunch Menu $20 we both chose a ramen: Miso Soy or Yuzo Shio and then we both chose a Don bowl. She chose the ikura ( salmon eggs) and I chose the Eel. The broth on both were sooooooooooooo tasty and flavorful. This meal comes with a salad with a miso dressing and wonderful panacatta dessert with a berry sauce. YUM YUM YUM!!!

There is also a Happy Hour menu that looked like something to try in the future.

Kanpai has become our favorite Japanese spot in Santa Monica. I love the k2 roll and the salmon teriyaki dinner set is lovely, a favorite of my youngest daughter. My son loves the curry pork dish. Chef Yoshi-san knows our orders and allergies before we even request! I forgot to say “no sesame” but he had me covered! 5 stars!

Kanpai is an excellent little Japanese restaurant found on Wilshire and 22nd in Santa Monica. I have been to the original location many times and decided to try this location closer to my home. It did not disappoint. The sushi and the salmon teriyaki was delicious. The quality of the food is elevated with a great presentation so this is a must for foodies. My compliments and respect to the chef. You can find menu items here that are original and only found at this restaurant. We tried this new cucumber dish. Mind blowing. The service is personable and quick. The atmosphere is casual and feels cozy and works with the delicious cuisine. I wish I had taken photos of the food.

We ordered the Japanese style fried chicken, fried gyoza, pk3 hand roll, and the miso ramen with the spice on the side. Everything was delicious! What a great find. The restaurant was not busy at all on a Sunday night. Service was quick. It is definitely a must try!
