We’ve gone here a few times dining in and had good experiences. Takeout was a different story. We ordered two steak hibachis with no mushroom. We got ALL the mushroom and the steak was overcooked. The rice was undercooked and crunchy. I ordered one general tso and one sesame. I got two general tso instead and it was mostly breading. We ordered appetizers and some sushi which were palatable. For $150+, 3 people went mostly hungry.

The sushi is consistently bad. Comes out sloppy and rushed. The rolls are always overstuffed and they just straight up taste bad. I’ve tried plenty of options and the quality has always been poor. The other food is fine buts the place is called sushi iwa and the sushi is bad. Two stars

Nice and attentive staff. Sushi quality is low grade. Rice was dry may have been out all day. There are better options for sushi in Hollysprings, Apex/Cary and Raleigh.

Went here for a birthday dinner so we had a big party. We had a long wait but when we finally were seated, they were very accommodating. Sushi was excellent, pricey but BOGO free. Very unique dishes with good portion sizes. Small place, cold air blows in which isn’t fabulous but we didn’t notice it too much once we were seated. Seems like it would be nice for takeout also, lots of folks were doing that while we were waiting.

I usually go to this spot because the sushi and other food is great. But I had a negative experience yesterday and feel the owner could have been more helpful. I placed an order on the Toast app for pickup. All I ordered was 4 pieces of nigiri and the Vietnamese shrimp summer rolls. I placed the order at 7pm and said pickup would be ready at 7:30. I got to the restaurant then and the order was not ready. I waiting until 8pm and the order was still not ready. I spoke with the owner and asked since they are so busy and backed up, could he just cancel the order and I receive a refund. He said he was too busy to assist me and refused to give me a refund. I never received my food or my money back. It was just upsetting at the lack of willingness to help. I get things get busy and backed up, but the right thing to do would have been to issue a refund. I will drive a little further to a different business in Flowers going forward.

This is the second time we have tried Sushi Iwa. The first time was when they just opened and it was pretty blah. Thought we would try again since it’s been a few years. They sat us in the front corner of the restaurant in a tiny little booth that was very close to another family. We couldn’t really hear our own conversations. The food this time was just alright. We got the Crab Rangoon and that was pretty good. The sushi was meh (ordered 4 rolls) and the chicken hibachi was lacking. There were more peppers and onions than chicken–and it was pretty dry. The miso soup that came with the hibachi meal was almost room temperature and only had two tiny pieces of tofu. My husband only got sushi and didn’t even finish one roll because he said it was so bad. Overall, not impressed and not worth the $115 we spent. That being said, the service was great. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to make us want to dine here again. They really need to up their game on quality of food and flavors if they want to compete with other Clayton restaurants and Japanese cuisine in Raleigh. Honestly, I would have rather had Panda Express instead.

I’ve been here many times and always enjoy my meal. But this time I was disappointed. The Massaman Beef Curry was prepared differently; maybe there’s a new chef since 2023. You get a lot of beef but some pieces were thick and chewy. The potatoes were sliced weird like augratin potatoes.
The salad was standard, it’s a good quantity. The ginger dressing felt rushed in preparation.
The Tom Yum Soup with shrimp had good flavor. However the shrimp was a little overcooked.
It was crowded, so maybe rushed to prepare.
Also did not receive a spoon with my makeup. The to-go utensils are prepared in advance and only had a fork and chopsticks.

Decided to give this place a try.
Service was good and prompt. Food was not too bad. Has the calamari, shrimp Tom yum, Thai basil chicken, special salmon roll and the green roll.
Calamari was a little overcooked – tough. The rest of food was good.
I am unsure if they would allow us to choose the spice level of the food. But that would honestly be ideal if it could be done.
Will definitely be back again!
