This is the best sushi I’ve ever had in New York. The rice was warm and soft, with distinct grains that weren’t loose, and had a subtle sweet and sour hint of sushi vinegar that melted gently on the tongue. The fish was perfectly paired with the rice, cool and delicate, requiring almost no chewing. The oils slowly released, bringing a natural sweetness and umami. As I chewed, the fresh flavor of the seafood gradually unfolded, intertwining with the mild acidity of the rice, creating distinct layers of flavor without overpowering each other.

The wasabi provided a subtle, refreshing spiciness at the end, not harsh but invigorating; the soy sauce added just the right amount of savory flavor, making the overall taste more balanced. What remained was a clean, lingering sweetness and umami, leaving my mouth feeling refreshed and light. Chef Kevin is amazing!

Really great sushi spot on Mercer. The fish was super fresh and had amazing texture. You can tell they use high quality ingredients. The sushi rice was just right, perfectly seasoned, and paired really well with the fish.

The chef and staff were very friendly and welcoming too. Cozy place and excellent sushi. I’ll definitely be back.

This place has ruined sushi for me anywhere else. Super friendly staff who were very open to questions about the food. I think this might have been the most delicious sashimi I’ve ever had. Expensive but honestly worth it

The space is small but it has a very cozy atmosphere. Only around 4 seats. We dined for 2 so it was perfect for us. Chairs are high, though, so be prepared to climb a little

One of the best sushi I’ve EVER had!!! Cute little place, they make the food right in front of you, everything is super fresh and tasty. We visited twice, and both times there was no crowd. Friendly and helpful staff, amazing flavors, and such reasonable prices!!! A must-visit!

Ordered the 3 rolls box and while the quality of the fish did taste good and fresh, the avocado to fish ratio was a little heavier than I expected/was used too. The eel & avocado roll was mostly an avocado roll with eel sauce and barely has any fish in it. If I lived here I would maybe give it another chance? But also know there’s better places that wouldn’t let me down!

Embarrassing presentation, charge an extra$1 and put this nigiri in a box worthy of holding it. Also you can’t serve uni like this. With all that said,
great nigiri.

Stopped by here in March of 2025 with a colleague to grab lunch. Ordered the Sushi Regular option. Sushi was amazing, both the rolls and the nigiri. Service is top notch too. Little place with counter seating only. Highly recommend!

Sushi 295 Mercer: A Hidden Gem in Greenwich village
Nestled cleverly at the name address, Sushi 295 Mercer is a delightful surprise. It’s not easy to spot from the outside, especially for fast walkers. Once you step inside, you see a counter with just 4 chairs, but believe me – you’re in for a treat. Here’s why Sushi 295 Mercer stands out:
Quality Fish: The owner focus is on top-notch fish. For just $23, you get a generous lunch meal of twelve sashimi, along with sushi rice on the side. The fish practically melts in your mouth, with exquisite flavors. I loved the sushi rice (not many places pay particular attention to it) – it was just the right texture, temperature, and the delicate taste – bravo!
Authentic Experience: The ambiance is cozy, not vested much in interior design – but in the food. It feels local, fits well into the neighborhood, and the friendly staff adds to the warm atmosphere.
Omakase Option: If you feel adventurous, they also have 12 pieces sushi omakase.
I went for Sushi & Sashimi dinner set of 6 nigiri and 9 sashimi accompanied by a toro roll (some extra). Still remember the taste of each piece, from yellowtail to salmon to scallop to tuna to toro. Exquisite!
Trust me, it is worth exploring. Whether you’re dining solo or grabbing takeout, whether you’re after exquisite sashimi or grabbing a spicy roll, Sushi 295 Mercer delivers quality sushi.
Expect lines at times —word has spreading about this hidden gem!
Excellent value for your money.
Highly recommend.

If you come here, expect Kevin to absolutely blow your freaking pants off (figuratively, not literally). The fish is like a butter pancake massaged by small hands. It melts in your mouth like an ice cream scoop in a microwave. Be prepared to have your brain and body enter a different universe as you explore a journey through the seven fishes of God. If you’re feeling Randy, bring some sake it’s BYOB. See you soon, Kevin, see you soon
