We were looking for burgers and were glad to find Surf City. The Philly cheesesteak is their most popular and it is excellent. The ghost pepper Jack is subtle but provides the right amount of kick. The burger was also surprisingly good, and they cook the patty to order. The Vulcan Mindmelt was okay, basically a bacon cheeseburger but in a sandwich form. A little underwhelming. The homemade chips were a nice touch. The subgarden salad was a little too sour with the dressing. You can add chips or salad for $0.99. Fries were good and came with the burger. About $16 per item. All in all a good find and would come again!
I just hope they had another option for a vegetarian hot sandwich
Edit a few hours later: The other person I got a sandwich for after talking this place up a storm again felt bad and let me try their pastrami. Full disclosure, I substitute the Swiss but the ghost pepper jack felt overkill when the aioli on that sandwich is already spicy from jalapeno. I’d felt queasy after ultimately being unable to finish my Italiano, so I had to wait a bit and didn’t have the half of the pastrami until about 5-6 hours later. So, cold sandwich, and yet the pastrami was phenomenal even cold! I don’t know how the melted jack stayed soft so long, but it seems they know their stuff with that with how much they tout their grilled cheeses. So, I’ve been getting the wrong sandwich here, clearly, even though I basically either get a pastrami or an Italian pretty much any other sandwich place. My consistent initial impression with this place really put a damper on things, plus I just didn’t feel well after my Italiano and couldn’t finish it. For those reasons the overall rating will still stay relatively low at now 3 stars rather than 2, but the pastrami experience with just half that cold sandwich was so great that the food rating now rockets up from 2 to 4 stars! So now I know to try and meet this place halfway!
Their sandwiches, especially the warm ones, taste like a properly crafted meal and not just a sum of its ingredients. They rotate part of their menu now and then, so you won’t get bored either!
They have a good assortment of local beverages, focused on beer but juices and such as well. The shop-made chips are a nice touch, but a bit soggy compared to those at for instance “Ellis” in Salinas.
The grilled-cheese was a solid representative specimen, but didn’t elevate it. The burger looked good, but my normally hungry teen didn’t finish it for reasons of “Well, it’s OK”. One hot sandwich (the aforementioned grilled-cheese) and a couple cold offerings was the extent of the vegetarian offerings, which for Santa Cruz feels like a bit lazy.
