If you are ever in Norwalk Iowa ( just south of the Des Moines airport) or in the vicinity, do your tastebuds a favor and stop in at the Sunset Lounge on the main strip of Sunset ( Hwy28) in Norwalk Iowa and have a Sunset Smash! This massive two Pattie burger is prepared with two perfectly charred smash burgers, cheese, pickle, lettuce and sunset sauce, all served on a toasted bun which may have been brioche but to be honest I’m not sure bc we were in a mission to get this recommended burger and didn’t even look at the menu! It’s served with your choice of thick cut fries perfectly fried or delicious macaroni salad (just like Grandmas)or coleslaw. We had the macaroni salad and fries with our burgers. Most of the tables are high top tables with bar height stools. No kids allowed, which surprised me since they serve food, but honestly it’s nice to be at a restaurant without children every once in a while. The playlist consisted of country favorites, disco, and some 80’s thrown in! I enjoyed every song. This is definitely a lounge so there are tv’s on most of the walls so you don’t miss out on your favorite sports event. The service was also quick and informative! I believe it’s a relatively new restaurant in an older building that was remodeled and updated. Years ago half of it used to be the towns Subway. I look for this place to be a runner if not the winner of the Best burger contest! You won’t be sorry if you make the treck there!

Sweet Neighborhood bar. Loved the Christmas decorations. I had the bacon cheeseburger SOUP with an appetizer of deviled eggs and it was fantastic. Service was Great and the Kitchen was speedy.

The daily cheese flight is worth checking out! On this visit I had their chili, chicken noodle, and bacon cheeseburger soups. All were hearty and delicious.

I don’t love a place that nickel & dimes their customers and ‘rounds up’ in favor of the business, not the customer. I’ll give 2 specific examples from our experience at Sunset.
We came in for the very first time to meet a friend. Sat down at the bar and chatted for several minutes before the bartender came over. It being our first time, we asked if they do a Happy Hour. The bartender said yes, but it had already ended. We ordered our drinks. Then I peeked at my phone. It was 5:56pm. Thought nothing of it. Chatted for several more minutes with our friend then looked at the menu for the first time. It stated Happy Hour ends at 6pm. We had placed our drink order before 6pm, after having sat for a bit before having the opportunity to place the order. Yet we were charged full price, not Happy Hour pricing. (This is what I meant by ‘rounding up in favor of the business’. They rounded up the timing of Happy Hour to be able to charge us a few extra bucks.)
Example 2: Ordered a smash burger and asked for mayo on the side. Got the bill and saw I was charged 50 cents for the mayo. What’s next? 50 cents for ketchup? 50 cents for mustard? 50 cents for a napkin? 50 cents for ice in my drink? 50 cents to use the bathroom? 50 cents to breath the air?
With so much competition and places people can spend their money, I do not understand these choices. They’re a complete turn off to the customer.
Food was decent. Not the best burger I ever had, but not the worst.

Tucked away in a newly developed strip mall is the Sunset Lounge where you can order a very tasty smash-burger called “Sunset Smash.” The pure beef was seasoned well with crispy edges topped with fresh veggies and a special sauce. The American Cheese cascaded over the entire entree flowing over a house made well proportioned bun. Travis—on Tuesdays— Bartender connoisseur— was full of helpful trivia related to the establishment and serving up info on the very tasty appetizers, popular dishes and made a fruity mocktail that exuded freshness. The curated decor has bar top stools and high top tables ( only) for seating with a half dozen screened TVs. The minimalist menu included appetizers and sandwiches with an extensive drink menu from cocktails, mocktails to beers. The dim lit atmosphere emits a quiet conversational tone where you can collect your thoughts while listening to soft music in the background. Needing a place to get in check with your thoughts try this community gathering place — the menu prices are reasonable for this up and coming area and parking in the back is close to the back entrance.

I hate to leave an outstanding review and more people discover this delightful little dive bar. The hardest working staff youll ever meet. Great food. Great drinks for the price. Great place to meet new friends. I havent met an unfriendly person yet and we try and go there once a week. When I drive by it, it makes me smile. Parking is weird but it keeps the riff raff out.

Sunset Lounge is a classic style small town dive bar. With beer signs and game fish on the walls it’s got a North WI feel. The deviled eggs and burgers are delicious. Fries were perfectly cooked and side salad was fresh.
