Popped in for an early morning Cubano sandwich and cafe con leche.

Seating inside with table service as well as a takeaway window and tables outside.

Service was friendly and patient with us as we worked out what to order. Cubano sandwiches were flavourful and a decent size.

Been coming here for years. Food and coffee is excellent! Nothing beats the fresh baked cuban bread loaves from the back. Make sure you stop by!

Horrible food and service. The place is run down, full of flies, and dirty. We ordered the breaded steak and it was cold, hard, greasy, and the taste was horrible. When we kindly asked to return the plate, after not having more than one bite… the server was supposedly told by the “owner” of Sunrise that they will NOT take back the food and it will need to be paid. They were completely unprofessional, took over 45 minutes to bring us our food, and the food was the worst food I have had in a while. I do not recommend this place. Do yourself a favor and go to another place for a nicer experience.

Microwaved old sandwiches for the customers.
We came here for a Cuban Sandwich after reading the reviews about fresh bread daily. We walked in, and the woman greeted us right away.
She disappeared into the back and came out with what looked like yesterday’s premade sandwiches. She squirted some mayo and mustard onto the center of the sandwiches, and added like 4 slivers of pickles to each. The next move is what killed the sandwiches. She then chucked both sandwiches into a microwave for 4+ minutes the first time, and 3 minutes the 2nd time! ‍♀️ That poor bread never stood a chance. Then she puts them onto a press to crisp up the outside of these sad, limp, microwaved sandwiches. My sandwich was still cold inside even after the microwave , and the roasted pork used was dry and flavorless, and clearly not the fresh pork made for the display counter. The chunk of pathetic ham that was carelessly tossed in there was just boiled ham. Don’t waste your money here, it’s not what it used to be.

They are quick and efficient and the staff handles the overflow and load. Food is very good and they do take out orders and pickups all the time.

They have a dining area inside and ultimately it’s a market style place, but could use a little more attention and refreshing of the environment.

My wife and I simply had a couple Cuban coffees (only about 4 ounces), but they were more than enough after breakfast. The hosts were very gracious, and the atmosphere is exceptional. There’s a grocery store on the property as well. Please visit Sunrise Cuban Market & Cafe in Tavernier Key…

3/10/25—-A Post-CrossFit Feast: When Hunger Meets Cuban Comfort Food
After surviving a brutal CrossFit workout on an empty stomach—not eating for 19 hours—I was beyond hungry. Some people do intermittent fasting; I call it accidental survival mode. But hey, I like to work out on an empty stomach, so no regrets… until the hunger hit like a freight train.

Thankfully, this Cuban café was just a one-minute drive from the gym. Perfect. No need for long decision-making—just food, now.

First Impressions: Buffet Style & Spacious Seating
As soon as we walked in, I noticed a buffet-style setup with hot, ready-to-go meals lined up. A tempting sight for someone who just burned more calories than they had in reserve. The place was spacious, so we picked a table further back to settle in.

It was getting close to 11 AM, but my stomach didn’t care—it was breakfast time for me.

The Order: Enough Food for a Small Army
I went for:
✔ Scrambled eggs with French fries (brought most of them home)
✔ Croquetas (because Cuban café = croquetas)
✔ Tostadas (because why stop at just one carb?)
✔ Coffee (of course)
✔ Orange juice (which I saved for later like a true planner)

My husband? He got an omelet, then immediately complained it was too much food—as he always does. So, we finally made a pact: from now on, we order one meal to share. (We’ll see how long that lasts.)

I also ordered boiled yuca con rabo encendido (oxtail stew) to-go—because the wise traveler knows, always think ahead.

The Atmosphere: A Gathering Spot for Hungry Workers
As we ate, we noticed construction workers filing in, one after another, filling up the place. That’s always a good sign—because if locals, especially hardworking laborers, eat here, the food is legit.

Service: Friendly & Full of Stories
Then there was Mari—so friendly, so talkative. She told me my name is very popular in Cuba, which made me feel honorary Cuban for the day.

Final Thoughts: Worth the Trip?
Everything was delicious, the coffee was strong, and the service was warm and welcoming. Plenty of parking, great home-cooked flavors, and a good spot to fuel up.

Would I go back? Absolutely. Will I drive 30 minutes to get here while hosting guests? Highly doubtful. But if you’re in the area and craving authentic Cuban food, this is the place.

Wise Words to End On:
“A good meal after hard work isn’t just food—it’s fuel for the soul.”

I have ordered take out from Sunrise many times and it’s always great.

They have a small store inside by the dinning room. They have outside seating and a take out window.

You can’t drive by with out stopping for Cuban Coffee or some fresh yucca or maybe some tostones.

Check them out and let me know what you think. They are always friendly.
