Wow, sunbird barbecue made the top 50 barbecue restaurants for 2025 in The Texas monthly which they are usually very good I’m shocked. You always know when you drive up and there’s not a line or it’s not crowded that there’s an issue. There was no line and it was not crowded on Wednesday at 12:30. I ordered the all in one which has the brisket ribs turkey and pulled pork. For $24.50 I’m glad they had a sample type menu item as a lot of people don’t. Now here’s the problem the ribs barely had a crust were a little tough and none of the barbecue had much of a smoke flavor. The brisket had a nice crust on it but was tough and flavorless. The pulled pork OK but same thing not much of a smoked flavor a little spicy that’s about it and very dry. The best thing is the smoked turkey it was moist but spicy. And the barbecue sauce is so spicy that it overpowers the flavor of the barbecue. Very very disappointed and shocked that Sunbird BBQ made it in the top 50 in Texas

This place ranks up there with the top tier Texas Monthly winners. Some of the best BBQ I’ve eaten. And right here in East Texas!!! The brisket was moist and flavorful. The turkey is the bomb. They have excellent sides. I had elote corn, mac and cheese, and charro beans. All fabulous. All that was missing was a banana pudding. Good job, guys!

I really wanted to love this BBQ, but to me, it just didn’t seem to have much flavor. I tried the ribs, brisket and sausage. Both the brisket and ribs were tender and looked amazing. The sausage was on the dry side and just not my type. The beans and street corn were a fantastic meal all by themselves! People at the other tables obviously enjoyed their meals and the restaurant was full of people taking to go orders and people eagerly waiting on their orders. The service is quick, attentive and friendly. The presentation is what a Texas BBQ plate dream is made of! It was probably just me being the odd man out that day. I will definitely try them again.

Literally everything we tasted was amazing. We had a brisket sandwich, brisket tacos, burnt ends, street corn and Mac and cheese. The salsa for the tacos was so fresh and delicious. The girl that helped us was super kind and helpful too! Awesome experience. Will definitely be going back.

Excellent BBQ. The brisket was some of the best I’ve ever had. The turkey was juicy and perfectly seasoned. The ribs are just like i like them, not falling off the bone. All of the flavors are great, nothing overwhelming perfectly balanced.

“Like a cowboy who rode into town five minutes too late for the hoedown, we came hungry and left humbled.”
TL;DR: Sunbird Barbecue’s menu reads like a meat-lover’s dream and (I suspect) tastes like smoke-kissed heaven; but you better show up early. By 1:00pm, the pit is picked clean. We missed out, but now we know: first in line gets the brisket. Last in line gets the door photo.
The third stop on our East Texas meat tour was supposed to be legendary. Big D and I were high on smoke and road dust, bellies half-full, spirits soaring. Two joints down, two to go. We were ecstatic with anticipation. Sunbird Barbecue was next, and all signs pointed to meat nirvana.
We’d been tracking them like two brisket bounty hunters all morning, checking social posts, drooling over every new photo. My mouth hit max moisture capacity when Big D read the day’s specials aloud like a preacher reciting the Book of Revelations:
– Maple bourbon blueberry pork belly burnt ends
– Brisket boudin
– Creamy mac and cheese
Sweet mercy. I tightened my belt and said a prayer to the BBQ gods.
ETA locked in at 1:10. I told Big D we had this. It was only two hours past opening. We’d be just in time for that first bite of brisket to hit like a country love song.
But the BBQ gods are jealous and cruel. At 1:00pm sharp, the bad news dropped like a cow off a cattle ramp: SOLD OUT.
We stared at that hand-scribbled sign like it was a breakup letter taped to the fridge. Blue painter’s tape never looked so heartbreaking.
We walked up anyway. Maybe we could smell the smoke. Instead, we met the pit crew, who were wrapping up the day’s magic with the kind of humble pride that only comes from turning oak and meat into pure happiness. They were kind, tired, and still smiling. We thanked them. Took a photo of the menu. Promised ourselves a redemption trip.
And we will be back. But next time, Uncle Sean’s gonna be in that line before the rooster crows, folding chair in hand, cooler of Shiner in tow, ready for brisket glory.
Stamp Count: As a consolation prize (or out of pity) they stamped the passport saying something about the rules and no purchase is necessary. Number 20. the mission continues.
Final Dad Line: I didn’t get any meat, but my hunger pangs got a full-course meal of disappointment.
FYI… I’m giving them 5 stars for everything, except food, because they were sold out. We met the pitmasters, they are great, and they must be doing something right to sell out so fast! Upon my return visit, and a tray of deliciousness, I’ll review the awesomeness of the bbq!

We went to Sunbird on Friday. HIGHLY recommend you get there early. The parking lot is very small and it fills up fast. The restaurant is even smaller. Maybe enough room for 12 people in a shared style table. Meanwhile the line curls around the entire room and you’ll have people at your back if you choose to eat inside. The drinks are in a can. Not a big deal just something I wish I’d known beforehand. We ordered $90 worth of food. Go the just the two of us which comes with 1/2 lb pork ribs, pulled pork, brisket and turkey. My husband loves bbq and he didn’t like the ribs or the pulled pork but ate both anyway because we dont waste food. The turkey was good. But very very spicy. The brisket was okay. Not much flavor. And I tend not to like very fatty pieces and that’s what we got. Not a bad thing just not what I tend to gravitate toward. My husband got sausage as well and didn’t finish that either. We both got a brisket taco and enjoyed it. The sauce is VERY spicy. Very. I could barely eat it. Which was where the problem with the canned drinks came in. I went through mine fast. But the Line was 10 deep so I couldn’t get another one. Ended up drinking a hot bottle from the back of my truck. we also got the street corn (which was awesome), the macaroni (again awesome) and beans. (Not so awesome. Again very very spicy.) I probably won’t go back. But this place seemed extremely popular and there are a lot of diehard fans of it, so it might’ve just been too spicy for me to enjoy it. But others didn’t seem as affected. (It didn’t affect my husband but again he wasn’t impressed with the flavor and it had nothing to do with the spiciness.)

Got to try Sunbird at their new location today and was extremely pleased. We had pork, brisket and turkey tacos, beans, street corn and house sausage. Its exactly what BBQ should be when you think of it. Staff was friendly as usual and the atmosphere was nice. Strangers talking to one another coming together over one thing, BBQ! Highly recommend, but show up early!

I’m in my 50s,and I’ve Traveled & lotta BBQ stops along the way. I don’t understand what all the bragging is about. This is parr BBQ at best. And the charo beans were awful. Better beans in a can at the store. Plus I asked for no fat on my sliced beef sandwich – so they served me more fat! Eeww! I don’t consider that edible food. Sorry to those of you who do like it. I just think it’s nasty& it has a horrible appearance to me. Plus the sandwich buns were tiny. The boudian I ate was the best though-give credit where credit due! I’m from Louisiana,so I know good boudian when I taste it! It’s was the best! And the sweet smokey bbq sauce was delicious. I might of been able to tell more about the meast if it hasn’t been served with an equal part of nasty greasy unediable fat. Sorry guys, not in my top 5 BBQ JOINTS

We really wanted to love this place, but in comparison to others in the “Texas Monthly Top 50” I can’t recommend. Very disappointing in all aspects of the experience. My second star was out of kindness…
