I ordered on DoorDash and was disappointed. The pasta was very hard, and the jerk chicken was dry. The pasta was also very dry no sauce or gravy, just big and stiff pieces. Sigh, it wasn’t enjoyable at all and couldn’t get to have my meal . Had to throw it out ! Ugh

They get 3 stars because the staff is nice, they give large portions, and they are open 24/7 but the food lacks a little flavor it taste a little bit like cafeteria food or either its a young person cooking the jamaican food. My complaint is mostly with the curry chicken. The chicken was better.
Also the price is a little too high but overall not bad. I will definitely return!

From the moment I walked in — at 3 AM, no less — I knew this place was special. The warm aroma of jerk seasoning and simmering oxtail immediately transported me back to the island. Even though it’s open around the clock, the kitchen clearly never sleeps. Every dish was outstanding. The jerk chicken was smoky, spicy, and juicy — perfectly balanced. The oxtail melted in my mouth and the sauce was rich without being overpowering. Sides like rice and peas, fried plantains, steamed cabbage — each one was done with care. I also tried the curry goat and it was a highlight; tender, flavorful, and authentic. Despite being late, the staff greeted me with genuine smiles and treated me like family. They answered my questions about spice levels and offered recommendations. The vibe is casual but cozy — reggae music softly playing, kitchen staff hustling but with pride, and a comfortable mix of locals and night owls. Clean tables, good lighting, and the kind of place you can relax in no matter the hour. The prices were reasonable, especially considering the quality and generous portions. I left feeling full, satisfied, and already planning what to come back for next time.
If you’re craving authentic Jamaican flavor in New Jersey — anytime, day or night — this spot absolutely delivers. Highly recommended.

The food tastes so good and fresh every time I go. The jerk chicken and oxtail are full of flavor, and that sweet chili salmon is crazy good. The peas and rice and cabbage hit every time too. You definitely get your money’s worth because the portions are big and the prices are fair. The people working there are super nice and always make you feel welcome. One of the best Jamaican spots around for sure!

If you’re looking for bold Caribbean flavors, generous portions, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Sun Island Plate Restaurant is an absolute gem. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the irresistible aroma of spices and slow-cooked meats that immediately set the tone for a satisfying meal.
I tried the jerk chicken plate, and it was hands-down one of the best I’ve had. Perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of heat, the chicken was tender, juicy, and charred to perfection. The rice and peas were flavorful and fluffy, and the plantains added a sweet, caramelized contrast that balanced the dish beautifully.
Another highlight was the oxtail—rich, savory, and falling off the bone. It’s clear they put a lot of love and time into their cooking, and it shows in every bite.
The service was fast and friendly, and the staff made us feel right at home. Whether you’re dining in or taking out, the quality remains consistent.
Sun Island Plate is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Caribbean comfort food. Whether you’re a longtime fan of island cuisine or trying it for the first time, this place delivers flavor, heart, and hospitality in every plate. Highly recommend!

Okay i will start by saying the food was good very flavorful and cooked well. The woman behind the counter was very pleasant and the establishment seem clean. Now what i did have a problem with, I ordered a Small oxtail with plantain and no veggies and it came with rice & pea for $21.00. Now there is no reason i paid $21 for a meal and only got 4 pieces of oxtail, 3 plantains even though i opted out of the veggies they could had give 2 or 3 more plantains and of cours a ton of rice which was more so hard even though it was flavorful.. I can until the price of things have went up but a lot of these carribean restaurants need to do better they are raising prices and giving smaller potions at least if you raise the price keep the same potion and it is absolutely ridiculous to charge someone for and oxtail meal and they only get 4 pieces of oxtail especially when you see 4 is being counted out.. Now i will say they arent cheap with the gravy and thats probably because they think it will cover up the fact that you only got 4 pieces.. The food is good but there portion need to improve

The jerk chicken I ate before I thought of getting a photo, it was that good!!
Portions – out of this world!
One plate HAD to be a few pounds.
The Alfredo was spicier than I expected! I love spicy, so it was perfect.
The jerk chicken didn’t make it for leftovers, but the Alfredo was just as good, heated up the next day.
I wish I lived closer, because I’d be here almost every day

The other day I ordered, Sun Island Plate, for lunch. I ordered their small Oxtail Platter w/ Rice & Peas, and Cabbage. Their Oxtails were phenomenal!!! The gravy, the seasoning, and the tenderness of the Oxtails were impeccable. The cabbage and the rice and peas were really good as well too. I asked the gentleman at the counter to give more veggies than rice and he happily obliged. The Oxtails were so good, that you can just imagine what the other menu options taste like. The quality is so important. All in all, this place is great! Would highly recommend their Oxtails and their other menu options to anyone in the Newark/East Orange area!

Their food was delicious! I went between 11:00pm-11:30pm. Their food was fresh. They let me try a small sample of the jerk before ordering because I don’t like hot stuff. The jerk chicken was so spicy to me but so good! Even though I’ll be drinking a lot of milk, I’ll order it again haha. They give you a good portion of food for the price. They were friendly and their establishment looked clean. I’ll definitely be back!
