If you have nut allergies be careful of the sushi train!! They don’t mark or label anything that has nuts in it, or have any warning signs that their sushi may contain nuts.
Our server didn’t ask about allergens, nor did we think a sushi place would be where we’d worry about nuts in the rolls. My husband is allergic to nuts, and picked a plate that looked very similar to their caterpillar roll with avocado on top and eel in the middle. As soon as he bit into it he had a feeling so he immediately spit it out. When we brought this up to our server, he admonished my husband for not knowing better. He said “it’s clearly listed in the menu that we have walnut shrimp rolls and didn’t you feel it crunch when you bit into it?”
We get that it’s on the menu, hence why we didn’t order it. But none of the train plates are labeled nor is there a sign that says to look out for rolls on the train that may contain nuts. Beyond that, they comped the walnut train plate (the one my husband bit and spit out) and offered to pay for Benadryl from the Costco.
For us, this could’ve landed us in the hospital since no allergens are labeled or warned about. And the response from staff shows that they are not allergen conscious. So unfortunately, we won’t be coming back.
As people who try a lot of sushi restaurants, we were blown away by our experience at Sumo. We ordered many items, but there were two standouts that were truly unique and unlike anything I’ve had anywhere else:
• Agedashi Tofu: The texture was incredible—perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining silky and light on the inside. It’s a must-order!
• Tropical Mango Roll: This was a total showstopper. The combination of fresh mango with the savory elements of the roll (maguro and sake) was so refreshing and creative. It’s a flavor profile I haven’t found at other spots in the area.
Beyond the food, the hospitality and service were so kind and welcoming. You can tell they really care about their guests. The ambience is also fantastic—it has such a vibrant, high-end feel that makes for an incredible dining experience.
If you’re in Los Altos, don’t miss this gem. We will definitely be back!
