I have said for many years and continue to say Sugarfish is one of my favorite sushi spots in Los Angeles. I actually think they have some of the best albacore in the entire city. I have been to many of their locations, but this was my first time at this MDR location. It’s located in a large shopping center so there is plenty of free parking right out front. It’s not very large, but it can host a good amount of parties, but would be best for groups of 4 or less. Our server was really polite and as always everything that we ordered came out very fast.

Every time I get Sugarfish for dinner I always do the Nozawa Trust Me, which is what I did for this dinner as well. I think it gives the best variety and for the most part has the largest amount of protein. I also added some Sweet Shrimp Nigiri on the side because it’s truly one of my favorites and it just melts in your mouth. I would highly recommend ordering both and I will be back many times again in the future.

Very good omakase, a few bites were not my favorite but overall enjoyable. Excellent service at the bar!

I’m giving 1 stars for a point to be made. I am a highly trained food critic. I have loved Sugar Fish and have been a big supporter for over 10 years. There’s nothing I will critique about the food or service. BUT, Sugar Fish corporate cannot afford to provide filtered water to their customers? I sat at the bar, indulging in my Sugar Fish experience, complete with Nozawa Trust Me, unfiltered sake and Nigiri add-ons. Then I went to wash my palate with a glass of water. All I tasted was Los Angeles tap water, loaded with chlorine. It too Nozawa from a 5 star high end classy establishment to a Motel 6 , ghetto burger shack. Ridiculous!

While I was visiting LA for Thanksgiving, after strolled around the marina area in Marina del Rey, I came to this Sugarfish restaurant for lunch in a shopping plaza not far from the marina. I was pleasantly surprised: how they serve food, food & service, and price & bill.

Once an order was made edamame is served in no time then the food I ordered came out like a 3 or 4 course meal depending on what you ordered. The sushi was exceptional because they serve as they are made – the temperature of rice was perfect as well as the temperature of fish. How they bill and making payment was the most efficient and straightforward I’ve ever seen. In the bill the final amount includes tax and tip and clearly sated ‘no tipping is necessary.’ Therefore no further calculation with % of tip, then addition and total, processing the credit card twice with customer signature. While I was wondering about the bill the manager noticed and came to explain to me. I wish all other restaurants make the billing and payment as simple as that!

Sugarfish was a decent experience overall. The atmosphere had the right vibes, but the space was pretty cramped, with tables close together, making it feel a bit crowded. It was hard to avoid overhearing conversations from the table next to us, which made it feel less intimate. This particular location is quite small, tucked away in a corner of a shopping center, which added to the feeling of being in a cozy, somewhat crowded space.

Despite the noise and tight seating, the service was impressive. The staff was quick to attend to us, and every waiter was incredibly friendly and attentive. They made sure we had everything we needed and took care of our table efficiently, even though the atmosphere was loud and busy.

As for the food, it was decent but not mind-blowing. We decided to try the $46 course, which gave us an experimental experience, offering a mix of sushi and hand rolls. While everything was fine, it wasn’t anything that stood out too much, except for the hand rolls, which were definitely the highlight. They were fresh, flavorful, and well-made, really elevating the meal.

Overall, while the food was decent and the service excellent, the tight space and noise might not be ideal for those looking for a more relaxed dining experience. However, if you’re in the mood for fresh sushi and don’t mind the bustling atmosphere, Sugarfish could be a solid choice.

Way overpriced and overrated! If you have a huge appetite then DON’T COME HERE! you will need to spend a few hundred to get full lol the food is fresh but the amount of food they serve is basically crumbs. You will leave starving like you came in if your budget is $50. They are one of those restaurants that serve 2 sushi pieces on a full size plate trying to make it look like you are getting a lot. They use too much sauce and the rice kept coming apart when I picked up my sushi when chopsticks. Another negative is that they have a mandatory 16% gratuity even if your service was horrible! On top of the mandatory gratuity that gratuity is also taxed. So not only are you forced to give a 16% tip but you are also forced to pay taxes on their tip for them! I will not be returning!

The sushi was fresh and delicious. This place has ruined sushi for me anywhere else, unless you can have another great omakase restaurant you already love. You can’t make a reservation so show up about 30mins-hour before you want to sit down and eat. They use a text based system that lets you see where on the waitlist you are.

Got the light sushi lunch set, just the right amount of food for a light, quick lunch. It included edamame, the sashimi dish, the three pieces of sushi, and a tuna hand roll. All dishes were served quickly and all delicious and fresh. Really love this place!

This is my favourite sushi restaurant of all time. I hadn’t been since they changed locations (they just hopped a few doors down to a slightly larger spot), and I was pleasantly surprised at the new ambience which was much more open and light, with a casual and classic Japanese touch to the furnishings, larger windows, and outdoor seating with umbrellas.

Before they moved, I always sat at the bar because you could watch them make the sushi and they did a thorough job explaining each dish. I missed that here sitting at the table; I ordered the tasting menu called “Don’t think. Just eat.” for $55, and couldn’t know the dishes in advance, but they did turn out to be basically the same as the “Nozawa Trust Me” with two extra sashimi. However, I didn’t even get much of an explanation when served, even after asking what they were.

Onto the food. As always, the quality of fish is outstanding: easily the best I’ve had. The nigiri were perfect and the Chutoro was my favourite. The two hand rolls were fantastic, but the tuna “sashimi” felt more of a ceviche or a raw fish salad than sashimi (it was still good, but unexpected). The eel was firm and not drenched in sugary sauce like you’d normally get at a sushi place, but more of a modest drizzle meant to bring out the flavour and emphasize the texture, which was more true to perfectly cooked fish than the soggy, greasy mush I receive elsewhere. The uni (sea urchin) was also very good, but not better than what I have had at cheaper restaurants (although it was more expensive). Everything was simply beautiful, and the amount of food left me reasonably full. My single complaint would be that the rice fell apart easily when the nigiri were picked up.

Overall, a great experience and seriously great value for money. I’d recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for higher-end sushi at a reasonable price.

Overall, the fish is fresh, but the food can be better. I got the Trust Me set for lunch. The tuna sashimi and crab hand roll was good, and the Hirame sushi was especially good (flavorful, a little fatty, melts in your mouth). However, the rest of the sushi (salmon, yellowtail, albacore) were very disappointing. Each piece of sushi had too much rice, had too much vinegar in the rice and the rice was too warm, which really masked the flavor of the fish. The cuts of the fish also tasted cheap, the fish were lean and not particularly flavorful. The hand rolls also had too much rice. The atmosphere and interior design of the restaurant was nice, but the food could have been a lot better with more care.
