I need to give details and if you knew my wife, you would know she is loved by everyone very sweet. Never has any confrontation with anyone she works in the medical field. She’s a very sweet person so this shouldn’t have happened, but I have to get detailed about the situation.
The incident involved two staff members: one white, heavy-set white female employee (unidentified) and, heavy-set white female store manager (unidentified).
Description of Incident:
1. My wife needed to use the restroom. She asked a store associate, who directed her to the restroom but stated, “The bathroom is for paying customers only; you have to pay for something.” My wife agreed to this condition and used the facilities.
2. Upon exiting the restroom, she was immediately confronted by both the store manager and the employee, who were waiting outside the door.
3. Both individuals began aggressively yelling the rule (“The bathroom is for paying customers only!”) in her face. The manager was particularly aggressive, yelling, being rude, and clapping her hands directly in her face in a physically intimidating manner.
This confrontation was not only highly unprofessional but was aggressive, humiliating, and designed to cause public embarrassment. My wife felt targeted and physically intimidated by the combined actions of the two staff members.
The aggressive conduct of the manager and employee constitutes clear harassment. I firmly believe that this confrontation was an act of discrimination and hostility directed at my wife (she is a black lesbian). The immediate escalation, yelling, and physical intimidation (clapping hands) went far beyond enforcing a store policy and crossed the line into abusive and discriminatory behavior. Even after all of that, they tell my wife to leave the store. She is upset. She’s telling them that the employee said she can use the restroom. The employee did not have her back and followed the managers actions when my wife told the employee something about her, not standing up for her. The manager proceeds to say she’s calling the police at this point me and my wife will be going to the police station to provide a statement about this incident.
The aggressive behavior and blatant lack of professionalism exhibited by both employees, particularly the manager, should result in disciplinary action. Customers must be able to visit these locations without fear of being harassed or discriminated against by staff.
