If huge portions is what you’re after, the fried chicken tenders will do you, but they were a bit thick for us, whole chicken breast pieces, and since they are fresh they will release water/steam and get a soggy bottom and top, so not as crispy as shrimp and catfish.
Good to know: the gumbo side comes with rice already mixed in, kind of like a jambalaya.
They have different sauces, and if you really want/love sauce, check and ask for extra, they will give you more (i.e. one time we found 1 ketchup 1 cocktail and another time 2 cocktail sauce, no ketchup which was fine with us, our orders were the same).
While the to-go pics show loads of oil, we dont think its worse than fried food at Fisherman’s market / Newman’s, where we also blot and degrease before digging in. Compared to the beer garden fried catfish /shrimp, it depends, so try both and see what u like better. The Cajun seasoning on fries was spotty this last time, but usually a bit more evenly distributed.
No complaints on our previous visits, but will not be returning after our strange unpleasant experience at the tail end of our last visit. Gentleman who brought our takeout was in a surly mood and seemed to be under the impression we had complained about the wait time? (we were busy talking and laughing while we sat/stood there, and do not know why he thought this), when my partner asked for extra tartar (fyi we ordered a catfish basket w cajun fries and shrimp basket and were given 1 tartar which is the norm since catfish comes w cocktail, so we were asking politely! for an extra tartar) he told the cashier to tell us not to come back?! We understand you can be having a bad day, but his behavior was rude and uncalled for.
Original Review: We’ve been wanting to check out Styr for a while now, so when they announced a Thanksgiving deal just while I was stressing about not being able to cook due to a lupus flare we knew the universe had aligned. I only regret not coming sooner! We got three plates for the two of us to ensure we had leftovers. This is some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Might have to start coming once a week. If you’re reading this today, Thanksgiving 2025, you should go grab a plate before they sell out. Even if you’re cooking today I really don’t think you’d regret it. It’s an amazing spread! The Mac and cheese is perfect. It somehow has every yummy texture a cheese can have in one Mac and Cheese. The banana pudding is absolutely heavenly. I melted when I tried the first bite. The people who cooked this food are artists!
What really sets Stry Kitchen apart, though, is the balance. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, like your favorite hometown spot, but the service and presentation are polished and professional. You get that home-cooked feeling without losing the quality and care of a top-tier kitchen. It’s comfort food done right, and the Cajun catfish alone is reason enough to keep coming back.
The sides are the real deal, too: the collard greens with the smoked ham hock were out of this world, and the red beans and rice are a must-try (nearly the best I’ve ever eaten!) You can really taste the difference in their homemade hush puppies—no grocery store box mixes here. We will definitely be back!
I got the shrimp and fries and I was blown away! The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and it had a little kick to it that was JUST right!
My husband and I are absolutely going back, and if you are looking for a place to try make this place a priority! Great food, great prices and lovely folks!
Hush puppies are amazing, and so are the Cajun fries!
