Place was very busy and definitely needed more than two servers. We waited a solid 15 minutes to place first drink orders. We also ordered the Truffle Mac & Cheese.
After another long wait (20-ish minutes) the Mac and Cheese arrived, followed shortly by those first drinks. The MnC was good, but sadly the bacon overpowered every other hint of flavor. We couldn’t detect any truffle flavor at all.
We ordered our entrees when the MnC arrived, and then waited over an hour for two dishes: a burger and a Caesar salad. We were told it took so long because they had to cook the steak that was added-on to the salad.
When the food arrived, it looked great. Burger was thick and juicy with a nice brioche bun. Salad looked well dressed and prepared, although the use of spring mix rather than romaine for a Caesar was unusual. The steak that accompanied the salad was absolutely fantastic, although we didn’t receive a steak knife so it was difficult to cut into smaller pieces.
The dressing was delicious and the steak was well seasoned. The burger, on the other hand was so salty, I could feel my blood pressure rising with each bite. The bacon jam wasn’t so much a jam as it was huge chunks of unbelievably salty bacon, and the queso sauce was also ridiculously salty. Making matters worse, they seasoned the burger (which would normally be greatly appreciated), making everything into a huge salt bomb.
We overheard the table next to us say the same things about their burger, so it wasn’t just our fate.
Despite the slow service and the salty burger, we enjoyed the evening. Our server was very friendly but clearly overloaded and as a result, quite absent for most of the night.
We placed our dinner order and waited about 35–40 minutes. After watching several tables that arrived and ordered well after us receive their food, we finally asked about our meals since we had tickets to a show. We arrived a little before 6:00 PM, giving ourselves an hour to eat and enough time to get to our 7:30 show. We were told a mistake had been made by the server and that our food was being worked on at that point.
Our meals finally arrived after roughly 45–50 minutes, leaving us about five minutes to eat. The food itself was very good. My friend didn’t love his fried fish — I think the cornmeal coating just wasn’t to his taste. I loved my salmon, and my wife thought her burger and fries were excellent.
The manager did check in and tried to help, but someone should have noticed how long we were waiting — especially in a restaurant that size. What really disappointed us was that nothing was offered to make up for the delay, the stress, or the rush to finish our meals. Not a drink, not a dessert to go, not even comping the two $6 starters. Just a “sorry, the server made a mistake,” and that was it. A small gesture — even inviting us back for a cocktail after the show or on a future visit — would have gone a long way. But unfortunately, nothing was offered, which didn’t feel very classy on Stone Turtle’s part.
That said, we liked the place enough that we’ll probably give it another try. It’s a fun spot in a great part of St. Louis with a good atmosphere. I still encourage you to check it out — just hope your timing goes more smoothly than ours.
Stone Turtle strikes the perfect balance of great flavors, great drinks, and a great vibe. Highly recommend!
