As I perused the menu, my mouth was watering. I love hotdogs. I love condiments. I love wacky toppings added to hotdogs, not just your typical selections. I love baseball games, but part of the joyful experience in visiting other stadiums is what kind of hotdogs do they have available. I hope there are ones with weird toppings! The regular menu for Stephen’s Hotdog Wagon looked promising, but when I saw the specials board. My stomach leapt for joy. There it was…”The Everything Dog”. The toppings were wild! Things I have never had on a hotdog before. They intrigued me and I began to wonder, what would that taste like? So I ordered it. It comes with literally every topping they have. Cajun crab dip, potato salad, beef sauce, chili, kraut sauce, cole slaw, hotdog sauce, 1000 island dressing, cocktail sauce, shredded cheese, and fresh cut onions. I needed a fork to tackle this monster!! And so, with gusto, I took my first bite. It was sweet, it was spicy, it was savory, it was tangy, it was…heaven in every bite. Each bite of this hotdog ushered in a different delicious taste to my mouth. Even as I ate through the hotdog to the end, it seemed every bite had a different but delicious story to tell. Perhaps the highest praise I can give this glorious, monstrous, hotdog delight is that I wish I had ordered another!
My most recent visit was during Birmingham Restaurant Week when they were participating in the Food Truck Pop Up downtown at City Walk. There was an event going on at the same time at the BJCC which left parking a mess. However, I circled the block many times until I lucked up & got someone’s parking spot that was headed out. I came to the Food Truck Pop Up & dealt with crazy parking JUST for my Stephen’s Hotdog fix. I’m telling y’all, they’re really THAT delicious!
Stephen’s is family owned & operated. Service has always been very friendly. They serve high quality dogs with excellent toppings & ingredients. The truck always looks nice & tidy. Hotdogs don’t get much better than the ones at Stephen’s. I’m looking forward to the next time they’re in town. I highly recommend trying “The Torch”, “The Jordan” & “The Rocket” dogs, but you truly can’t go wrong with any menu item.
This is on Stephen’s Dogs and More. Once again anytime I review a new place I do my best to have at least one other person try it and this time it was a total of 4 of us. Yes 4 unsatisfied customers. I do not get joy out of posting bad reviews but it is what it is.
We all ordered the same hotdogs The Blue Devil and The Jordan.
Let’s start with The Blue Devil it’s just a chili cheese dog with just chili and cheese no onion no mustard how most usually come. First bit it was okay nothing special the hotdogs was lukewarm and the chili tasted like straight out of a can and the cheese was cold and not melted and a bun pulled right out of the bag so wasn’t toasted or steamed almost stale tasting. Super disappointing. 5/10
The next one was The Jordan which consisted of Kraut Sauce (Kraut, Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Onions). Same boiled hotdog same tasting bun but the Kraut sauce helped a lot. This was actually really good and a step up from the last one but unfortunately it was also lukewarm. 6/10
Stati Jones had this to say “I could make that at home myself. 6/10”
Rashad Caldwell also had this to say “My thoughts on the Hot dog food truck is it taste like something I can cook at home really the chili cheese dog taste like store bought like out of a can and the other one it tasted decent. I give it a 3/10.”
Unfortunately Anthony W Evans II didn’t make the deadline to send in his thoughts because he was stuck protecting and serving but just no he didn’t really enjoy it and said never again.
All in all I think it’s safe to say we will never try this again unless something changes. It felt like there was no love no care for their product and I hate that because we are huge hotdog fans and we left feeling disappointed. When I go to a food truck or restaurant that sells hotdogs I don’t want something that taste like I made it at home thats why I choose to go to a Gus’s Hot Dogs or a Tonys Hot Dogs or even a Sneaky Petes and an honorable mention to Paul’s Hotdogs & Grill Inc. I want something I can’t recruit at home. But hey I personally wouldn’t recommend it but if you’d like to try them for yourself, then check this place out.
