Steffano’s U-Bake Pizza & Sub-Shoppe – Visit Montana
Reviews
For today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we decided to try a place where I was told that “Their sandwiches are even better than Staggering Ox!” (We reviewed Staggering Ox sandwiches back in August 2025 and their breakfast in December 2025.) We headed over to Last Chance Gulch to pay a visit to Steffano’s U-Bake Pizza and Sub Shoppe.
I was excited to try one of their sandwiches and write a glowing review of how good they are, but there’s much more to a dining experience than just food. And Otto and I both made the same ordering mistake. I can’t fault the hostess. She greeted us cheerfully, and when I asked what was the most popular sandwich, she said, “Many customers choose to build their own.” I should have listened better. Otto and I both ordered the sandwich called, “Deb’s Ham Melt” which is described as “Thinly sliced Ham – piled high atop a Mayo covered bun, smothered in Provolone, heated to perfection.”
We placed our orders at the counter, and the server brought our sandwiches out to us once they were ready. They offer Pepsi products, but both of us ordered water. The sandwiches are offered in quarter size, half size, or full size. We both ordered the half size which was probably a foot long. I can’t imagine eating a full size one unless I was splitting it with someone.
I can honestly say that the sandwich was exactly as described. But it was lacking something. Both of us went back up to the counter and requested some mustard, which they gladly gave us in a small plastic container. The flavor was very good. The bread was soft, fresh, and very tasty. The meat was thinly sliced and perfectly heated to melt the Provolone. But when I think of sub sandwiches I think of all the other toppings that decorate it. You know, like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, and special sauces. Our sandwiches didn’t have any of those things, BECAUSE WE DIDN’T ORDER THEM. I’m sure that we could have had anything we wanted, but the pressure of being in a new place and not really knowing our options caused us to order without getting what we would really want.
Otto briefly paused between bites to comment that the sandwiches are, “Very filling” and that, “The buns are good.” They remind him of the sandwiches he makes for himself at home. He said, “They need a condiment bar.” He also stated that he prefers Jimmy John’s because he has his order there memorized. “A number 9 with extra sauce.” He likes the fact that JJs puts sauce on it.
The decor was, let’s use the word, “eclectic.” It looks like they are going for a 1950s diner vibe, but on a budget and without much commitment. Record album covers from the 50s and 60s line the top of the wall. Under the album covers, two of the walls have vintage Pepsi and Mountain Dew signage. One wall had a Route 66 vibe, one wall had a vintage drive-in movie theme. There was a traffic light hanging between the windows and a bicycle hanging from the ceiling in the ordering area. There was just no consistency in the decor. It felt like a sub shop attached to a gas station. The booths were standard pressboard fake wood grain. There is a jukebox, but it wasn’t functional. Boomer music was playing in the background, soft enough that Otto could not hear it.
Sub shops aren’t really our thing. We prefer sit-down restaurants. But we agreed that we’d be willing to try them again now that we’re familiar with how to order. The next time I visit I will treat it more like Subway and build my own ingredients list.
If you’re in the mood for a tasty, deli-style sandwich, Steffano’s is a great option. I’ll award ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the great sandwich, but I’ll withhold the fifth ⭐️ due to the cheesy gas station decor.
The food? Fresh, flavorful, and reliably satisfying. Whether you’re craving a loaded sub or a take and bake pizza with that just-right crust, Stephano’s delivers the goods. Service can be a little slow during peak times, but the staff more than makes up for it with their friendliness and attentiveness. You’re not just a customer here—you’re a neighbor.
It’s the kind of place that feels like it’s always been part of Helena’s rhythm. No frills, no fuss—just good food, good people, and a sense of place that’s hard to beat.
Food was decently priced too
