The Steaming Tender in homey, welcoming Palmer, Mass. is dedicated to serving its hungry patrons with grace, dedication and excellently prepared home-style dishes. This renovated 19th century train station / restaurant offers outstanding appetizers, delicious soups as well as tasty unique cuisine and classic American standards. Traveling from NY to visit family and friends, we always dine here, where our favorites (Aromatico Parmigiano, Lobster Ravioli soup, full Turkey Dinner with home-made corn bread with brown butter, and lastly, the chef’s Whiskey Bread Pudding ) are affectionately served by friendly and engaging servers such as Dara who appreciate their customers, warmly addressing their requests and sharing the history of this beautiful locale.
For hungry railroad enthusiasts, active Amtrak and commercial train lines occasionally run past the windows of this restaurant train station. A restored locomotive and tender, a caboose and a Pullman dining car are on its premises.

I found a gem!! We were “pacing a train” for my son who rail fans and I decided to turn down what I thought was a dirt road rather than chasing on the highway and rolled into this beautiful place. This is a historical railroad site that is busy with trains for the enthusiast! But the food!! I only rate 5 or 0, 2-4 anyone can figure out and to me is not worth my effort … and this place gets on the 5 list. The atmosphere you just have to experience … it’s like polar express meets Rosie the Riveter. The service is wonderful – very kind and accommodating. The place is very busy but plenty of wait staff presence at the table – the drinks stay full. The food is just amazing. I chose the Reuben and my son chose the MacNcheese. Just amazing. The prices reflect the experience but I appreciated that they could have charged more but don’t. This is definitely worth the travel out with the family. You won’t be disappointed! We’re coming back and I can’t wait!

When you walk into the steaming den that you definitely can have a wow factor the beautiful restored train station old trains in the front yard train tracks run within feet of the building although they don’t stop at the building, it’s a unique experience to have the train run by weight staff dressed in railroad decor, mini antiques, and railroad memorabilia the food was perfectly cooked. Service, I wish I could give 10 stars. Dara was beyond amazing. She made the whole experience enjoyable, relaxing and her personality was beyond measure.
The food was delicious. The cocktail was wonderful! The Whiskey Bread Pudding…was just simply DELICIOUS.

I have not been back to The Steaming Tender for a few years, I was pleasantly surprised by tonight’s visit. We arrived at about 4PM and there was no wait for a table. We were greeted by our server quickly and ordered drinks and an appetizer. I do not recall the name of it however it was 3 pork and beef meatballs cooked and served with a French Onion Soup ajus with melted Swiss Cheese. My partner and I both agreed that the meatballs were some of the best , if not the best we have ever tasted.
I ordered the Aromatico Parmigiano which is
Rigatoni / grilled chicken / cajun / tomatoes / spinach / parmesan cream sauce and my partner ordered the
Olmstead Pot Roast which is
Braised pot roast / mashed potatoes / rich beef gravy / vegetable of the day
(She could cut the pot roast with a fork and it melted in your mouth)
Both meals were absolutely amazing and exceeded all expectations by far.
For dessert I had Cheesecake and strawberries and my partner had Bread Pudding neither of which disappointed!
This establishment has improved 150% since my last visit, and is our best visit there to date.
We will be going back again, soon!

I loved dining here! It’s the perfect mix of fine dining with a casual, comfortable vibe. Every dish I ordered was gorgeous on the plate, and the flavors matched the presentation perfectly. The mac & cheese is next-level — creamy, cheesy, and hands-down one of the best I’ve ever had. And you can’t leave without trying the bread pudding for dessert — it’s rich, sweet, and perfectly done. The atmosphere is inviting and relaxing, while still feeling a little special, which makes it ideal for a date night or a casual dinner that still feels elevated. The staff were attentive and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommend this spot — everything was excellent, and I can’t wait to come back and try more from the menu!

Cool place. Very long wait to sit (we were a party of 8). Took nearly an hour to get the food which was mediocre. Good place to gather a large party as it’s a huge place. Really cool if you’re into trains. The service was very good, attentive and communicative.

This was our first time having the pleasure of dining here. What a historic & eclectic hidden gem. Our bartender, Lane – a lovely, honest, perfect personality to welcome us was such an unexpected surprise to a new place. The bar was inviting & cozy, and all of the nostalgic photos on the wall were very cool to see & remind us of how quiet and simple times were. The restaurant initially checked all the standard “ regular boxes “ – clean bathrooms , friendly staff , fun relaxing ambiance, and amazing-ness of the entrees.
Then it only got better from there. I had the mostly perfectly crafted filthy dirty gin martini in a very fancy etched vintage glass. The artichoke appetizer with the most decadent lemony butter sauce & a very generous, perfectly dressed Cesar with homemade croutons was the ideal starter. With so many intriguing menu selections it was a tough call. I ended up ordering the roasted crispy duck with squash & corn salad that perfectly complimented each other. It paired very well with the Gentleman’s Red Blend. The baked haddock with fries & coleslaw also did not disappoint. Lane was wonderful & very engaging and we cannot wait to go back. Thank you for taking pride in your business & your servers – it was noticed & most appreciated.

Me and my wife have gone there before and loved the atmosphere, the service and food . We went for lunch today and I ordered the Pullman car club and was very disappointed in the quantity of meat on the sandwich . The sandwich was very fresh and tasty but for 17 dollars was very skimpy there was like one slice of ham and 2 slices of turkey . I offered advice to the waitress for management as it is a 17 dollar club sandwich that it should have more meat for the price . I wasn’t looking for anything in return just a suggestion to management. I will be going back as I said me and my wife really enjoy the restaurant . I also was complimented a sample of the bread pudding and it was delicious .

First time here, VERY tasty! I started with a pint of Delirium Tremons (yes, a pint). The Mrs had a lemon lavender Collins (w/alcohol). I had the streaming pile ham and pulled pork sandwich, with Cajun chips…. very good. The Mrs. Had the pan seated haddock w/blueberries, also excellent. She said it was the best meal she has had in a while!
