Social Profile:

Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.

Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

I can’t really rate the food because when I arrived 20 minutes before close, the workers had shut the restaurant down. The speaker told us to come back during business hours. Ummm….we were there within business hours. A car in front of us had the same treatment and seemed completely confused. Two cars pulled in behind us only to be turned away as well. In a time of struggling restaurants, seems a very poor way of doing business. That’s four carloads I saw turned away well before close.

I pulled around to the window and the employees, who were standing around doing nothing, just glared at me and turned their backs. I did snap a photo, so I’m including that here.

I hadn’t been to a Steak n’ Shake in a VERY long time until the other day, when I decided to give S&S a shot and had a random great experience at the 54th St. location that renewed my interest in the restaurant. This sours it once again. That was short lived.

Business hours say they are open until 10pm. And we showed up between 8pm & 8:30pm. The lobby still had customers eating food. And some rude little blonde girl with a big attitude yelled at us across the lobby with a nasty tone that they’re closed and gave a dirty look.
She is lucky that someone else stepped in front of her and politely told us that they are closed because we were about to have some unfriendly words for her and her unpleasant attitude. Just because she is having a bad day, Doesn’t mean she needs to treat the customers with disrespect and ill manners.
She needs to learn how to treat people better. Or management needs to train her better.
Definitely not professional or welcoming.
Explains why I see the other bad reviews saying similar stuff.
Hopefully management addresses the issue. But probably wont. Easy way to lose customers.
Not coming back. And suggest others stay clear of this unfriendly & unprofessional place. Plenty of other places to get better food.

The ordering experience is a bit odd since they added the kiosks, but I can’t say I hated it, just that it was strange. You order at the kiosk but a staff member also comes out periodically to check on you.
The food is as good as I remember though. It’s had been years since I had eaten there and I was not disappointed. Delicious burger, crispy fries, and a tasty milkshake!

Went to the Grand Ledge location last night. Placed order at kiosk ($65) and sat down. Many tables and people standing without food. Found out people had been waiting an hour to get food. Some received their orders after waiting that long, and the food was not what they ordered and was cold. Others wanted a refund and the staff stated they could not provide a refund as the manager was not there. When many people were standing at the front desk to discuss, all of the sudden the power shut off. The whole restaurant went dark. I got out of there as quickly as I could. It was the worst experience I have ever had in ANY food establishment my entire life!

I remember what steak and shake used to be. It was a nod to the retro diners and fifties burger stands with paper hats, hostesses who were happy to seat you, waitresses who smiled and were nice to children. It was a treat. A special time. Now, it’s a mediocre burger, ordered from a kiosk and the special salt for the fries isn’t on the table anymore. Nobody brings you anything. It’s entirely self-serve and they have the AUDACITY to request a tip!

As a pick up on the way home in a bag meal, it’s about average. As an eat-in experience. It’s just plain over. It’s like when Starbucks decided app orders and drive through mattered more that service and comfort.

The steak and shake I knew and loved… Is dead.

I won’t be back. Not because I feel any particular way, but because both the wife and the daughter said “we don’t need to go there anymore”. When a Gen X and a Gen Z both say they don’t need to go there anymore…

That restaurant is over.

Still got it with the food, but not with service (kiosks).

– Milkshake, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- $5.29: Took my kids to get shakes (not pictured). One was free from filling out a survey.

At another location, I had an Oreo shake and it was well mixed. The cookie dough on this one was settled at the bottom. Not sure if that is the nature of the larger and heavier chunks. It was still good otherwise.

– Service: Kiosk ordering removes most of the customer interaction and makes it a sanitary experience, especially at this location (Alpine). Service is the biggest thing lacking.

– Atmosphere: Wonderful old school diner feel. We wore the paper hats and assembled the cardboard convertible car. It was a blast!

Many of the tables were dirty. The cleanest one we found was still dirty with salt crystals everywhere. I had to clean it myself because no one was taking care of the dining area.

– Conclusion: I would make this a highly recommended place, except the kiosks are a HUGE turn off.

Visited on a Saturday at 9pm.

Food is great. Service is horrible. Stand at the the counter for a while to get greeted with an attitude. The guy that walks around the lobby does not need to ask me 7 times how my food is as it gets annoying.

My wife got me to try a garlic burger awhile ago for first time. Amazing I told her, and then I figured I’d get her me and our father one on my way home. And DAMN not a good damn either , is it under new ownership.

Trevon and the crew are great! Everyone was so helpful and kind. A genuinely great customer service with a smile experience. Attentive to customers needs. Trevon closed the shade when he saw the sun in my eyes and helped my daughter with the beverage station. Another worker checked on us at the kiosk station to see if we were good. This is hard to find. These days it’s normal to have employees treat you like you are an annoyance to them but not here! Give them a raise boss
