Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.
Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

I pulled around to the window and the employees, who were standing around doing nothing, just glared at me and turned their backs. I did snap a photo, so I’m including that here.
I hadn’t been to a Steak n’ Shake in a VERY long time until the other day, when I decided to give S&S a shot and had a random great experience at the 54th St. location that renewed my interest in the restaurant. This sours it once again. That was short lived.
She is lucky that someone else stepped in front of her and politely told us that they are closed because we were about to have some unfriendly words for her and her unpleasant attitude. Just because she is having a bad day, Doesn’t mean she needs to treat the customers with disrespect and ill manners.
She needs to learn how to treat people better. Or management needs to train her better.
Definitely not professional or welcoming.
Explains why I see the other bad reviews saying similar stuff.
Hopefully management addresses the issue. But probably wont. Easy way to lose customers.
Not coming back. And suggest others stay clear of this unfriendly & unprofessional place. Plenty of other places to get better food.
The food is as good as I remember though. It’s had been years since I had eaten there and I was not disappointed. Delicious burger, crispy fries, and a tasty milkshake!
As a pick up on the way home in a bag meal, it’s about average. As an eat-in experience. It’s just plain over. It’s like when Starbucks decided app orders and drive through mattered more that service and comfort.
The steak and shake I knew and loved… Is dead.
I won’t be back. Not because I feel any particular way, but because both the wife and the daughter said “we don’t need to go there anymore”. When a Gen X and a Gen Z both say they don’t need to go there anymore…
That restaurant is over.
– Milkshake, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- $5.29: Took my kids to get shakes (not pictured). One was free from filling out a survey.
At another location, I had an Oreo shake and it was well mixed. The cookie dough on this one was settled at the bottom. Not sure if that is the nature of the larger and heavier chunks. It was still good otherwise.
– Service: Kiosk ordering removes most of the customer interaction and makes it a sanitary experience, especially at this location (Alpine). Service is the biggest thing lacking.
– Atmosphere: Wonderful old school diner feel. We wore the paper hats and assembled the cardboard convertible car. It was a blast!
Many of the tables were dirty. The cleanest one we found was still dirty with salt crystals everywhere. I had to clean it myself because no one was taking care of the dining area.
– Conclusion: I would make this a highly recommended place, except the kiosks are a HUGE turn off.
Visited on a Saturday at 9pm.
