Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes.
For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business.
Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.
Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

Food was delicious and the restaurant very clean. Cameron was running around helping everybody, cleaning tables, delivering food and just hustling! They are operating with a very small staff but doing a great job!

Very quiet, no one else in dining room. Hated that you had to order from the kiosk, had to get your own food and drinks, they call your name when it’s time to get your food or shakes. Then when checking out it asked about a tip, for who, I did everything but cook it and mix the shake. I like having waitresses taking my order. The kiosk doesn’t always have all options for food. It was honestly scary being the only ones in dining room and no workers around.

The food was delicious and the restaurant was very clean! Huge shout-out to Cameron, who was the definition of hustle—he was running around helping everybody, cleaning tables, and delivering food. This team is operating with a very small staff but they are doing a great job! Cameron’s work ethic alone makes this a 5-star visit.

This New Castle location is very clean and everyone is incredibly polite. We got our food so quickly, and the staff was incredibly helpful. We visited at 8pm and were pleasantly supprised. The bathrooms are older, but were clean. The restaurant seating area was incredibly clean and Crystal is an incredible manager.

I don’t mind the fact that they did away with the wait staff or even that I have to order on a kiosk now but every time I come here anymore it is the filthiest restaurant I’ve ever been to. Out of 21 tables and booths only 3 of them were clean enough to consider sitting at and even then we wiped the table down because it seemed barely touched by a dirty rag. I can’t even describe the floors and bathroom without expletives. If this is ok with health inspectors we need new health inspectors. I wish the photos really showed how gross it really is.

We stopped for a late lunch since we don’t have Steak ’n Shakes where we live anymore and were excited to visit. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The self-order kiosks were frustrating, and staff weren’t interested in helping, so I couldn’t ask questions or order what I really wanted. Even with a large group ahead of us, it took 45 minutes for three combo meals, while others who ordered after us were served first. When we asked for an update, the employee was brash and clearly annoyed, yelling to the back before saying they were “waiting on fries.” The fries were cold when they arrived—so that wasn’t true.
The burgers were also not like traditional Steak ’n Shake burgers—thicker and lacking the usual flavor. My son’s milkshake was half whipped cream. To top it off, a woman at the grill yelled at staff twice in front of customers, creating an uncomfortable scene. Overall, poor service, unprofessional behavior, and disappointing food.

Went to steak and shake for dinner last night, and found that they changed everything. You don’t get waited on by humans now, you just place/pay for your own food on kiosks, which doesn’t really bother me, because I like all the do-it-yourself kiosks, but my husband wasn’t pleased at all. The food was good… my chili was hot and tasty, my burger was also tasty but a little greasy, but the prices were too high for having to wait on yourself. The place looked clean to me, but was completely empty of customers. There wasn’t a whole lot of atmosphere, except for the pictures on the walls, and like I said no service except for when they called your name and you come up to retrieve your food. But at least it tasted good!

Walked in, saw a sign in front of us that said to order from the kiosk? That was a first one for me. Where are the employees? Well they did have some cooking. They didn’t greet us or anything (too much to ask for or don’t get paid for that I guess, idk). So we ordered. Food came(because we went and got it, even tipped ourselves). It was ok I guess. However the milkshakes my kids ordered were kinda sad because they weren’t in the usual glass cups. They were in small foam ones. So all in all a disappointing experience.

Been here several times and the food was always good. Today…. not so much! They are operating with a small staff, but too wait 40 minutes for a Frisco melt and a double steakburger only for them both too come out freezing cold is unacceptable! Ordered a grilled cheese that after a while I finally said forget about it. Definitely will be awhile before I come back!

First time at a steak n shake in over 20 yrs. I could have gone another 20. My burger came out with ketchup and onions (which I didn’t order), fries are not good. The smell of ketchup turns my stomach and it caused me to be nauseous for the 8hrs of driving I had left. The staff was great to remake it but the damage was done.
