Late last night we decided to stop at our local Steak ’n Shake, right off Gunbarrel Road by the mall. This location is almost always busy, but we chose to dine in and place our order at the counter. The young lady taking our order started with that tired, end-of-shift energy, but by the end she had warmed up and was friendly and engaging — a nice turnaround that set the tone for the meal.
Food
We ordered Garlic Double Steakburgers, fries, and onion rings. The burgers were mouthwatering, cooked well, and hit the spot. I’ve always liked the thin shoestring fries, while she prefers the onion rings — and we both agreed, we always want a few more of those rings. I went with a peanut butter cup shake (fantastic), and she ordered a small Oreo Cookie shake that gave me some real FOMO after a taste. Food was hot, fresh, and exactly what Steak ’n Shake does best.
Service
Our drinks and food were delivered right to our table — a service touch you don’t always see in a fast-food setting. The rest of the staff we interacted with were friendly as well, which made the visit feel more like casual dining than quick service.
Atmosphere & Cleanliness
Here’s where the experience took a hit. While we easily found a seat, the dining area was due for a cleaning — trays needed clearing, and tables could have used a wipe-down. That’s understandable on a busy night, but the bigger issue is long-term upkeep. The ceiling vents are caked in dust, the tiles show years of neglect, and the seating is cracked and worn. It’s not just last night’s mess — it’s a need for deep cleaning and some basic repairs that have been overlooked for far too long.
It’s disappointing to see reviews from years back mentioning the same issues, especially when the fixes (new tiles, cleaning vents, replacing worn seating) could be done in a few hours of sales. It reflects poorly on management, not the staff.
Overall
Steak ’n Shake still delivers great burgers, shakes, and friendly service. But this location is overdue for some care from upper management. The food and people deserve a better setting than what they’re working with right now.

We’re from Nashville in town for New Year’s and stopped by the drive thru at this location. I wish I had gotten the name of the woman at the window because she made my week. She was the nicest, kindest, friendliest employee of a fast-food restaurant that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in a long time. She’s a mature black woman and was working the drive-thru window on 12/31 at 5:13pm. The name on my receipt is Pamela but I’m not sure if that’s her. Anyhoo, she deserves a raise and I hope this location knows how blessed they are to have someone like that working for them. What a pleasant gem of a human being she is. The food was also delicious (we haven’t had steak and shake in years so it hit the spot) and the drive-thru line moved quickly. Wish we lived here as we’d be back at least every month!

Service was excellent. I dined in & as soon as I placed my order & found a seat, a minute later they brought me my shake. And in under 5 minutes, they had my meal ready & it was delicious. Love the cheese fries!

Loved it. Girlfriend and I were in Chattanooga checking out the tourist attractions. Got the munchies and stopped into Steak ‘n Shake. Great atmosphere and fast service. Food very good. Then back on the road. Plenty of free parking all around and close to front entrance.

I haven’t sat down for a meal in steak ‘n Shake in many years. The food was delicious the fries cooked in the beef tallow are amazing. The milkshake is one of the best, service was friendly and it was a great value so I definitely recommend it.

Rather unclean, could have just been post rush hour but doubt it. Employees in the back were cussing up a storm just chatting with their coworkers and could hear in the lobby. Server Kennedy nailed it though, everyone else there was lazy and semi rude. Burger smacked though. Can’t beat a burger fry drink x2 and a large shake for $22. Let alone the yummy tallow.

I was really surprised by how good this Steak ‘n Shake was. Time and time again I’d been told this wasn’t worth trying and that it had gone downhill, and granted I kind of judged it by the look of the outside and believed that it just wasn’t worth trying. Today I gave the place a chance, and I had one of the best steakburger-style burgers I’ve had in a long time! The beef was super juicy, the lettuce and tomatoes looked like they were out of a magazine, and the fries were hot and crispy. I know this a long review but it’s just none of the other ones on here seem to do them justice.
They’re definitely not the fastest fast food out there but I definitely think it’s worth a try.

UPDATE: It’s a horrible rainy day but had to be out and about. Drove thru to get a quick lunch. And once again I heard that friendly welcoming voice taking my order. Found out her name is Pam. Thank you Pam for bringing sunshine into this dreary day. My meal was hot, fresh and delicious!

You have to use the kiosk. Don’t feel the need to tip if you’re taking your own order. Had to wait over 5 minutes for our cups. Not exactly a clean place to eat.
