Recently had Steak ‘n Shake after many years; The beef tallow fries caught my attention. I ordered the double steakburger meal via DoorDash and was surprisingly pleased. My burger was prepared well, packaging was intact, generous portion on the fries which were good as well. Coke Zero was a bit flat, but overall happy with my purchase. I look forward to the improvements at this location.

Steak ’n Shake has always held a special place in my heart — it’s a nostalgic part of my childhood and a place filled with wonderful memories, particularly those shared with my late grandmother. During a recent visit to the Lithonia location, I was hopeful for a great experience, and while there were some highlights, there were also some definite letdowns.

First, the good: the service was friendly and efficient, which I truly appreciated. The staff made the ordering process smooth, even though it’s a bit different now — you place your order via a kiosk and receive a QR code to get your drinks, rather than ordering directly with a server. It’s a modernized system that worked well enough and kept things moving. The location itself is convenient and easy to access.

The food, overall, was very good. Most of our meal was fresh, flavorful, and lived up to what I remember loving about Steak ’n Shake. However, the dish that mattered most to me — the Chili 5-Way, something I ordered as a personal tribute to my grandmother — was deeply disappointing. It arrived cold and unappetizing, to the point that I had to throw it away without more than a bite. That truly broke my heart, considering the sentimental value it held for me.

Additionally, while the service was kind, the restaurant itself could use a bit more attention to cleanliness. It wasn’t terrible, but the dining area and some other spaces definitely felt like they needed a deep refresh to match the quality of the food and service.

In the end, I’m grateful for the moments that lived up to my memories, but it’s hard to ignore the disappointment surrounding the one item that meant the most to me. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because with a little more attention to detail, this location could easily honor both the brand’s legacy and the loyal guests who return looking for a piece of their past.

I ordered a patty melt combo meal with a vanilla shake. The fries and sandwich were hot and fresh. The shake was great as always.
My only complaint is that they provided no napkins nor a spoon for the shake. There was a straw provided though.

I love this place. I don’t eat fast food often, but when I get a craving I come here because that Garlic Double with raw onions is my favorite. I ordered this time and got my food from drive thru. I didn’t have a destination other than home, so I decided to pull over in mall parking lot and eat. Glad I did, because they forgot my onions. I checked the receipt to make sure it was on there, because she did repeat my order twice and I heard her say it. Upon confirming, I went back and told them what happened. Handed her the burger to confirm, thinking they would throw it away and cook another. Instead they put onions on the burger I returned and gave it back. Now as a former restaurant owner, I know this is a health department no no. I was so taken by this action, I just drove to the garbage at the end of the drive thru and threw it away. Hurt my feelings because I gave up on fast food a long time ago for things like this. Now the one place I held onto has let me down as well.

I recently visited the Steak ‘n Shake in Lithonia and had a mixed experience. While the speed of service in the drive-through was acceptable, I found the overall quality to be just average. The staff seemed somewhat friendly, which was a plus. However, the presentation of my meal left a lot to be desired. I was missing the cherry and whipped cream on my shake, and it felt like the presentation was a bit sloppy. It’s hard to feel completely satisfied with my visit when the details were overlooked. Overall, I’d rate it a three out of five.

My food was burnt. We ordered cane sugar cokes & they didn’t have them, then we tried to get drinks & they only gave us one drink. So we paid an extra $2 for nothing plus got screwed out of a drink. My onions were burnt so bad that they were disintegrating. There was no butter on my butter burger, it was just a normal steak burger that was terrible. The milkshakes were entirely too sweet. Won’t be back.

Steak n Shake is supposed to be an atmosphere of nostalgia from the days of old, so to have everything self service does not align with, because the goal is to recreate the past customer service is equally important as the food. I wonder why the kiosk self pay ask for gratuity, one 3 employees seen in the whole place, & they were on the grill. There was a long wait for food. I had to call someone from the back to help to figure soda fountain, turns out you have to scan the barcode on your receipt to that to work to dispense the drink. I have been to other location, that has actually server, it was a totally different experience I loved it. They may be saving money by having minimal staff, but it is at the expense of delivering the steak n shake experience. If you are old enough remember the TV Happy Days, & the restaurant they hung out at, that is supposed to be the Steak n Shake vibe, not all the automated, self service stuff.

I haven’t been to a Steak n Shake in a few years so I’m hoping they are not all like this one. You can only oreder using a kiosk, there are no waitresses, you can hardly get a question answered. You also can’t personalize a shake anymore. There are a set of things you can order and thats it. No more chocolate banana or chocolate strawberry shakes for me. I’ll just go someplace else.

Food was amazing for a late night spot. Customer service was splendid. I love the Frisco burger, add onions and bacon.!! I will most definitely be coming back more often. Couldn’t even take a picture of my food. That’s how good it was!! Also, I love that the Staff wears white,nice and clean. Thank you for the reassurance that you all come to work clean and ready to go!

TLDR:
Can’t beat the pricing for the food you get, regardless of “inconvenient” changes to the “experience”

While the menu is incredibely limited compared to what it used to be, the pricing and actual quality of the food is still amazing. My order came out within 5 minutes of it being placed, and everything was hot and fresh. But sure, is scanning a QR code everytime you want to get a refill inconvenient? Yes. Is it the end of the world? No. I mean come on, $6 for a double steak burger with toppings, and fries fried up in beef tallow? Mcdonalds won’t let you get a 10pc nugget combo for less than $10
